Firmware Update I do I get rid of the pretty pictures?

I hate this new UI. Can I get back to a library display with just text? Why on earth would anyone want to look at book covers, let alone pictures of book covers? They just take up space and interfere with navigation. They're great if you have only a few books and prefer looking at pictures to actually reading, but this new UI is an imposition. Is there any way to fix this, or has Amazon screwed this up for good (i.e. bad)?

I don't suppose I could just back up to an older firmware update?

At the top of your library, Tap the Sort Button, select "List"

This is why OP is complaining: List view has ‘pretty pictures’ now. Apparently ‘ugly pictures’ would be preferable..

Seriously, I have come to like having the thumbnails, but if/when Amazon updates the UI they should consider adding:

- ‘Compact’ List view (no thumbnails, maybe just 2-3 lines of information instead of 4) so it shows more like 8 items per page
- Collections view List mode

Personally I think navigation is better with the scrolling feature. You can jump to any location by tapping on the corresponding position on the scroll bar; no longer have to swipe multiple times (sometimes accidentally opening a book) or use the hidden Go To dialog. You can also drag the scroll position indicator, and hold the page buttons down to scroll through things.

With a long list, it’s always been faster to use Search, and this doesn’t really change that.

OOps... my bad,, My kindles are currently not signed in, so I don't get the remotely enabled enhancements.

But a "thousand words" can't match the few you need when picking out the book you want to read. I knew when Amazon announced the new interface was going to be more like a tablet that I wouldn't like it. I'm not interested in any Kindle that will get this upgrade, so I've most likely bought my last new Kindle. Fortunately the Voyage didn't get this upgrade so, until they obsolete it, I should be "good to go" for a while longer.

Comparing the old and new list view, you only lose 1 book per page. So it's not that big of a change.

And as tomsem said, navigation is waaaaaaay better this update. You can get through your list much faster.

Well, in the Horror genre you get to see Bad Men spilling blood and guts all over the place - often in strange places.
In the Romance genre, you see Bad Men kissing beautiful women. Or a woman will nuzzle a half-naked Bad Man (or a horse).
In Westerns, you see Bad Men who need a shave smoking cigars and riding horses and getting hung.
In the Mystery genre, you see all kinds of Bad Men carrying horrible guns that shoot fast bullets, along with Helpless women, which often leads to:
the Detective genre, with sleazy-looking, worn-out detectives helping women who need Much Love who are often pursued by Bad Men.

Now you understand why covers are so important: There are a lot of BAD MEN out there.

If there were a Compact (image-less) option for list view, it might ‘scroll’ faster. My PW4 seems to take 2-3 seconds to redraw each time I go to a new position. Though it doesn’t seem to matter much whether it is in List or Grid view, or whether the images are cached or not.

I may have to take a video and count frames.

Unfortunately, no. But you can with a Kobo.

The (167 DPI) kindle 2 shows 10 books per page, so the cumulative loss has been substantial.
