Why is calibre auto converting my kepubs to epub?

I can't figure out what is wrong. I don't see anything in the settings that would cause it to do this. Under Adding books auto convert is turned off.

Edit: I used kepubify to convert it. Decided to try to open it in notepad to see what I could see and in the mess of gobbly gook I saw "mimetypeapplication/epub+zipPK" and calibre is set to read the mime type. So that's why I guess.

I have windows 7 and couldn't get calibre to convert to kepub so I tried that. I did find out today what version the kepuboutput plugin I should download.

Anyway in the last 24 hours, I've managed to completely destroy my library. I used check library and had it look for problems, for some reason it deleted all the files that were kepubs and I lost all my epubs too that had annotations. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled calibre multiple times thinking it was a setting stuck somewhere, used reve uninstaller to try to nuke it, then hunted down and removed the leftover folders, accidentally deleting some things. In the process I somehow managed to overrwrite a backup and lose my annotations. I've had this library going for years without an issue, sideloading books onto an old kindle and keeping my annotations intact.

So basically lost a bunch of books and annotations trying to fix this stupid thing. My kindle isn't synced to amazon so if I lost my local copy and my backup (and the backup of my backup), they're gone for good. I'm normally careful haven't lost anything like this before. I always was able to restore everything. It's just shit compounded on shit.

I'm done. I liked my old kindle sideloading books on calibre, dealing with kobo is just ridiculous. I'm not very technical and this is too confusing. I've had an easier time installing custom ROMs on my phone than dealing with this. That's not exactly easy for me either, but I didn't lose anything important. I'm returning the stupid kobo, getting a paperwhite, and not using this stupid program anymore. The system I had worked for many years till now.
