Kindle Paperwhite - Calibre - DeDRM - Conversion
If...
1. you have Calibre installed on your computer, and 2. you have the DeDRM plugin installed in Calibre, and 3. you purchase a title from Amazon and use "download and transfer via USB" to download the purchased title from Amazon.com to your PC and from there to your Kindle Paperwhite, and 4. you copy the .AZW3 file from your Kindle Paperwhite back to your computer and into your Calibre library, and 5. you convert the .AZW3 file into other formats (e.g. .EPUB, .MOBI, .PDF, etc.) Is DRM and unique metadata removed from the .AZW3 file that you copied back to your computer and into Calibre? Is DRM and unique metadata removed from the converted files (e.g. .EPUB, .MOBI, .PDF, etc.)? |

@Soonerlater
If you've already done steps #1 and #2, when you get your title from Amazon via "download and transfer via USB", skip the transfer to your Paperwhite step and just upload directly into Calibre ("add book"). Once in Calibre, do what you want: change format, upload to your Paperwhite, etc. ![]() |

Isn't there a Calibre forum for questions like this? It seems like almost every message here on the Kindle forum is either about Calibre or some other brand of ereader. I guess I must be in the minority because I only get my books from Amazon and get them delivered via wifi.

By my count it's 4 Amazon : 1 Calibre...seems like the Amazon Forum would be a natural place to start ![]() Also, it was one question, one answer and then a tap out. I'm not really sure what the beef is here... ![]() |

As for unique metadata, it depends on what metadata you are looking at? Mobi doesn't support embedded metadata though calibre will insert a metadata jacket (page), ePub is likely the best format, PDF is an iffy format. Assuming you have KF8/azw3 ebooks, you can embed some metadata but Amazon doesn't seem to do much embedding of metadata as most I have imported into calibre seem to have a rather poor selection of metadata. Personally, I would go for the download to your computer, import into calibre where you can edit metadata, covers, etc. and then send to your Kindle. |

I believe that what Soonerlater means by "DRM and unique metadata" is any information that can be used to identify the person who downloaded the file originally from Amazon.
Whether or not such information exists I think it is best to act as if it does and to limit any sharing of files obtained in this way. |
