Replacing Kindle for PC in Linux

Apologies to everyone if this is not posted in the most appropriate forum.

For a number of years now, I've been keeping a Windows laptop alive for the sole purpose of running Kindle for PC to download Amazon books. I then process these for in Calibre and sideload them to my (non-Kindle) e-reader.

Said laptop is now going the way of all electronic devices, and I can't afford to buy another Windows machine solely to buy books from Amazon, so I'm trying to find a way of completing the process entirely within my Linux system.

Annoyingly, the one step I can't get to work is simply getting the books from Amazon onto my main PC. There's no version of the Kindle reader for Linux, so I can't simply buy and download them my attempts to get Kindle for PC working through WINE have so far been a complete failure (and I'm not even sure if it's still possible any longer).

Surely, I can't be the only Linux user facing this problem (can I???). Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Buy a cheap used eink Kindle and register it to your account. Then you can put it in a drawer for the next 10 years, but you'll have the "Download and transfer via USB" option available for downloading your Amazon purchases.

I am so glad you mentioned the drawer - i think I've got an old Sony Reader lying in one that I could use as a sacrificial lamb.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll give it a go and let you know what happens.

It must be a Kindle. You cannot register a Sony to your Amazon account.

Try installing the windows with the serial number from the old computer into a virtual machine on Oracle Virtualbox. Then you can install Kindle For PC on it.

An actual eink Kindle, KK3, or ideally later model you can register. Then it can die.

I use Linux and this is the way I do it. It works well. In the U.S. you can find these for about $20 to $25 shipped on Shop Goodwill. In England I can only look at eBay and they look fairly inexpensive...

I'm not sure what the cut-off point is for how new the Kindle can be and still work for this (someone here probably knows). If I was to guess I would say through the first Paperwhite edition -- but it's just a guess. I know the Kindle Basic (no-touch) with the buttons (4th generation) works and so does the Kindle 3 (keyboard).

Good luck.

Windows XP in Virtualbox would be the least demanding in terms of resources but Kindle for PC for XP was abandoned a few years back. Dunno if it still works or not. Windows 7 Thin PC is again much less demanding than the full fat Windows 7. Also you can use a lightweight Linux distro like Puppy Linux to host the Windows VM.

Many thanks for all your input.

I've decided to go with the second-hand Kindle solution. I may resent having to buy a Kindle, but I'm thinking it should save me hassle when the time comes to upgrading my OS (I generally do a complete re-install, rather than upgrades).

I'll let you know how it goes once my eBay purchase arrives.

Though for me, it's a backup for the day that Amazon decides the K4PC will download KFX or nothing.

Just wondering, the books you want to read are not available as epub in some other store than Amazon?

There are quite a few books that are exclusive to Amazon so you have no choice in where to purchase them. Price is not an issue for me since Kobo will price match if they have the book. I've even had Kobo price match a one day sale on Amazon.
