Running Calibre (currently 5.32.0) on Windows 10. As of several weeks ago Calibre became impossible to run. The program would start up (albite a little slow) and I could maybe get one function/option/mouse-click to respond (very slow) and at that point any further attempts to do anything result in Calibre hanging. This happens regardless of what I've attempted to do, everywhere from the open-file dialog to simply scrolling down a page.
I only have a little over 5k book entered and prior to some point in the recent past, everything was functioning normally. I've tried reverting to older versions but it doesn't seem to help which leads me to suspect some type of library issue, but I would have no idea where to even begin. Any thoughts or suggestions? At this point the program is completely unusable. I'd hate to have to start over with something else. ![]() |

Does calibre run happily if you start it without plugins ( calibre --ignore-plugins )?

If running without plugins is still laggy, go to Library > Switch/Create Library and select the option to create a new library at the new location.
I've accidentally messed up the library a few times (e.g. accidental recursions or badly-coded composite columns) and caused Calibre to hang and/or outright crash. Last edited by ownedbycats; 11-23-2021 at 07:58 PM. |

I've tried running without plugins. This helps. Calibre no long hangs so badly that it dies/has_to_be_killed, however it still runs horribly slow. Example, switching from highlighting one book to the next one down, it's about 2 seconds from the mouse-click to the entry being highlighted.
As I was able to get some responsiveness, I did a DB check under library maintenance and everything came back fine. As for creating a new library, it does seem to improve responsiveness but hard to judge as there are no books to process to test more thoroughly. I appreciate the suggestions so far, any other thoughts? |

reboot in safe mode and see if it goes back to normal speed.

Ive seen this a couple times, switching between the 32 and x64 versions fixes it, every couple releases I have to swap.

Quote:
![]() Does that mean you have both versions, 32 and 64 bit, installed (which is legitimate) and you switch between them e.g via different shortcuts. Or does it mean you uninstall the version that doesn't work and install the other one. BR |

That suggests that the glitch is in the registry, which calibre itself uses sparingly, 99% of its controls are in its %appdata% configuration folder and library databases which are shared between 32 bit and 64 bit installs. The only things calibre puts into the registry, that I'm aware of, relate to file type handlers and the calibre:// url handler, and I would think they're common to both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. I'm out of ideas, other than what's in and around this post BR |

You could also be missing the obvious. Issues with the actual exe. (I only started noticing it around 5.20 or so)

There are about 1 million users of calibre 5.3x on Windows, see ==>> https://calibre-ebook.com/dynamic/calibre-usage. There are less than a dozen reports of problems such as you are having, which leads me to think its something related to the platform.
Have you tried running in Windows Safe Mode, or re-installing a version earlier than 5.20, you'd need to uninstall what you have first. You can also lodge an 'official' bug report, see ==>> https://calibre-ebook.com/bugs BR |

Years ago, WACOM graphics Tablets caused grief. It sure would be nice if we could narrow this down, by figuring What is different (or changes from one use to another) Most common is Multi Monitor rigs, with dialog opening off visible areas Hi DPI graphics, Aggressive A/V (defender seems solid, so why spend $). Calibre uses background 'worker' processes, so things don't go All Stop, while they grind away. 3rd party 'helper tools' can get in the way Calibre works pretty much straight up on all my (mostly Vanilla) Windows systems. |
