Kobo ClaraHD not waking from sleep

For the past 2 months now my ClaraHD running KO Reader hasn’t been waking from sleep sometimes, while other times it does. If I use it frequently then it’ll wake from sleep fine, but if I go a few weeks without reading it’ll require a full reboot out to the awful Kobo system to wake up.

Has something changed in KO Reader? Is my Clara dying? I’ve been using KO Reader for years now and I’ve never had this issue before.

The builds are all current stable builds from August on.

My Clara did suffer a few drops to a hard floor in the past few months, but would that cause this occasional not waking from sleep?

If you were previously using a version from a couple of years ago the answer could be yes, or perhaps you just never noticed? There's an automatic shutdown by default that's intended to keep your battery from slowly draining in standby if you just leave it sitting for weeks. I added it to KOReader back in 2019 but it's very similar in principle to how the default Kobo system functions.

See settings → device → autoshutdown timeout.

You should be seeing the "Powered off" flag on your screensaver, though.

(An aging device with a wonky RTC might not behave sanely anymore on that front, IIRC, we've had someone with such a device investigate it over on GitHub).

When it shuts down, it doesn't have any flag on the screen, where is it supposed to appear?

I checked the Device Autoshutdown timeout and it's set for 72 hours, but I just checked it then and it's been over 72 hours since I used it last.

I am using a sleep cover on the device, sorry I left that out.

When I do have to turn the power back on it, goes right back to Nickel and I have to load KO Reader again.

You can turn it off by pressing the power button for a few seconds or choosing shut down in the hamburger menu (top right) and then you'll see.

The ClaraHD is NON RESPONSIVE at the times when I'm trying to get it to work.

THE ISSUE:

Sometimes when I pick up the Clara HD that has KO Reader running, I open up my sleep cover and the the thing is 100% NON-RESPONSIVE. I have to HOLD THE POWER BUTTON to get it to REBOOT, it reboots into NICKEL.

I want to find out what has been causing this behavior so I can use it like normal.

The "fix" you're repeatedly purposing ONLY WORKS if the KOBO IS RESPONDING.

You want to find out, but you're unwilling to take 10 seconds to determine if the device shut down or not.

Edit: you start troubleshooting with double checking some stupid stuff like whether cables are plugged in. Not because the chance of success is particularly high but because it's quick and effortless. In this case it's just ABSENT INFORMATION.

That's the freaking point. You need to know what the difference looks like.

Sorry, when I said "It requires a reboot" that is BECASUE it's 100% unresponsive. There is no input being received from the screen.

Which is exactly what you'd see when the device is shut down or if it ran out of battery, neither of which are unexpected if you left the device for several weeks, the fact that we'd all love it if the battery didn't drain a couple percent per day in sleep notwithstanding.

Forget it, just attach the crash.log if it happens again and maybe there'll be something funny in it. But you need to learn to spend 10 seconds to take out your ruler.

I suggest you follow Frenzie's advice and manually shut down the device as a trouble-shooting step. You'll then know exactly what your device looks like after a shutdown, and you'll be able to compare it to what happens after you leave it alone for a few weeks.
