USB networking bettles

Hey guys,

I'm attempting to get a PW2 acting as a screen for a raspberry pi in my shed. I've successfully jailbroken the kindle and have KUAL as well as USB networking and VNC viewer going.

I've been struggling to get the USB networking going - conversely I've had no issues with wifi networkworking and kterm, and have been able to ssh into the pi from the kindle, as well as view the x11 server. I'm having a couple of issues which I think I can overcome with some fiddling (will tack on at the end just in case someone has a quick fix) but my main issue is getting the actual USB connection working...

Out of the box the pi didn't have usb networking on, but I found a workaround to update config in some post here and have it going now.. For reasons unknown usb0 is there but always down, and when I plug in the kindle it's usb1, but I don't see this should cause any issue... kindle ifconfig shows expected entry for usb0 and standard 192.168.15.244 IP... I can successfully update IP with ifconfig, but pings from pi->kindle or kindle->pi don't work and ssh just hangs...

I'm no linux expert and am at a bit of a loss - if I was actually having an error throw I'd have a path to follow but at this point I'm just scratching my head... Anyone had a similar experience and can help nudge me along??

In terms of the other niggles I'm seeing with wifi:
1. SSH from pi to kindle is asking me for a root password despite having a shared key I generated on the pi and put in the authorised_keys folder... any obvious miss here?? seems like it should just work.. kindle -> pi no issue as I actually have root password.
2. I've been viewing a VNC server the pi has spun up from the remote desktop workspace of my PC that is controlling the pi, in which I can use the PC mouse and keyboard... however I really want to use :0 to use the mouse and keyboard attached to the pi, but when the pi boots with no display attached there is no workspace.. I understand there is an x11 dummy workspace package I need to place with, but has anyone solved this and know of a good tutorial or anything to save me bashing through it?
