BUG in Kobo: firmware update destroys Overdrive access or your collections info
After a firmware update, you are signed out of Overdrive.
Then you can't sign in again - either to Overdrive or your chosen library. It just goes back to the main page - as others have reported on here. You can successfully sign in by signing OUT of Kobo. The result? YOU LOSE ALL YOUR COLLECTIONS INFO: the collections are there listed but the books are unattached. |

If this was actually true, it would have been reported long before now.
It sounds like you had a corrupt database and when the Kobo rebooted, it did not work properly. Logging out or replacing the database with a recent non-corrupt copy are your solutions. |

I followed the suggestion of someone on here.
They also had a situation where they could not sign in to Overdrive. For them too it just kept returning to the first 'page'. The solution that worked for them was signing out. It also worked for me. But with disastrous results for all my 'COLLECTIONS' info. I believe in due time others will report this. NOTE: I never signed out of Overdrive. It signed me out with firmware update. |

But if the database is corrupt, it may not be able to read your Overdrive login and when you do login, it's not able to write the login to the database.
This is not a problem because you've updated the firmware. |

Any collections you made should sync back along with any Kobo purchased books (which you didn’t you strip of DRM and side load prior to a database corruption.
Anything sideloaded is never synced with Kobo. Though as this is generally the case with ereaders it shouldn’t be a surprise. As to the bug it’s far more likely that Jon is right since literally no one has run into this issue and it’s been over a month since the last firmware update went out. |

Rather odd. I have updated firmware very often and never had an issue with being signed out of Overdrive. I have signed out of Overdrive when switching between libraries but had no issues signing back in.
Possibly a PEBKAC error? ![]() |

What is the sign that the database is corrupted?
Everything was working fine except Overdrive and I think I had just synced. This thread described my problem and the solution I followed. I think it's important people realise that if they do this, all their books' connections to the different collections will be destroyed - except for those you bought from Kobo. You will have a bunch of empty collections. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh....php?p=4154960 Quote:

If you had bothered to so some searching, you would find that very often the first sign of database corruption is after a firmware update when the ereader is restarted and the database reloaded. Quote:
And ghod knows, I've signed in and out of Overdrive enough times when switching libraries and haven't managed to run into issues so this suggests that your issues are not common. As for your fondness for bold and colour? That's annoying and unnecessary. |

NO thanks to this unnecessary insult David!! Quote:
It seems you're looking for anything to criticise, David. The bold is used for people to get to the essence of what is being said. The colour is used either to differentiate things from each other or to highlight points that are the most important of all. Both actually take me MORE time but are done to help others. On that topic of helping others... I feel you could do so much more good in the world if you helped others without having to attack them as well. I have learnt something big in living with many people: the tone you say something in is absolutely massive. You can tell someone where a million dollars is buried, but if you insult them in the process, they will actually hate you. You can call someone a liar and a thief, but if you do it tactfully enough, they will still like you. Tone is huge in this world mate. Why waste your time polluting your good advice with harsh attacks? (It also wastes other people's time too, because their sense of an injustice being done will prompt them to respond. But in future, know this: I may just report posts polluted with nastiness) |

If you had read my post about the database possibly being corrupt and responded to that, then the discussion would be very different and the tone would be much nicer.

Sorry you took offence but when a simple "database corruption kobo site:mobileread.com" search on Google comes up with multiple hits and much information on the causes of database corruption and suggestions on how to avoid it, it is hard not to believe that in this day and age, someone would not do a search before asking a question.

I had same problem as op. My Forma did an update, letting it do that broke access to overdrive. Nothing worked except to sign out ofkobo... Overdrive is how fixed but 8 have lost all my current reading positions for sideloads, after signing back in.
Power cycling did not fix it. I have 2 library cards, for two libraries. Mine and my daughter's .both were broken, but still worked in the lobby app. Kobo would ask for sign in credentials then loop back to asking again... |

Sure, they could have fixed it at the exact same time I gave up trying to solve it and decided to sign out... But that is SO unlikely
It was broke for 48 hours , during which I read all the threads.. it was fixed as soon as I decided to sign out and then sign back in. Throughout the outage, overdrive was working on pc and I. Libby app... And It was working for months until I recklessly ran a check for updates... Also. There was no evidence of any database corruption. Everything except overdrive was working. Pocket sync continued to work Dropbox access continued to work... |

It's when I read complications like those listed by the OP and others that I'm pleased I made the decision when I bought my first kobo ereader that I wouldn't ever let it access the internet post the set up. What a headache for all concerned to have stuff just as you like and then whammo it's gone.
I can understand why you do connect and use overdrive etc from your ereader, but what a lottery. I'm guessing it's not as easy as say doing a backup of what you have on your ereader and restoring that either, it's more complex because of the Kobo overlay.
