Glo HD - extremely slow / laggy

I have a Glo HD that until a week ago has never had a problem.

It's been on FW version 4.25.15875 since late last year - no changes since then.

All of a sudden with no reason that I can see (no impacts, no updates, no changes to patches etc) it has become so slow as to be unusable. A normal text only page turn is taking around 7 to 8 seconds as opposed to the other Glo HD in the house (same FW etc) which takes around a second at most.

I've tried factory resetting which did not change anything.

Thinking that the SD card was failing I've just changed that out for a brand new one with a new GloHD image (Thanks davidfor!! ) - but unfortunately the behavior is still unusable and slow.

So my problem is not the firmware, and not the SD card.

The screen seems to be rendering text and images just fine - but the only other symptom I have seen is that every now and then after say 30 seconds of being on a page the black of the text or image can suddenly become around half-tone grey. Turning the page will have the screen looking normal again, and it doesn't happen often.

Does anyone else have any idea of what could be causing this?

I should add that I've had a good trawl through the forum and can't see anything similar being referenced....

Does it behave in a similar manner if you use it while plugged in to a power source?

Good question! I hadn't thought of the power supply side of things.

Just tested it and yes, it's still behaving the same way. No noticeable difference when plugged in to a power supply unfortunately.

So it's most likely not being caused by the firmware, the SD card or the battery.

That said, the behaviour started at a time when the battery was down to around 40% which would be the lowest level it's been in years (I usually keep it around 60% to 90%).

You could try installing the latest firmware 4.26.16704 and see how you get on.

OK, that's another good idea. Have upgraded and tested it and yes, it's still behaving the same way. No noticeable difference using FW 4.26.16704.

So still most likely not being caused by the firmware, the SD card or the battery.

Thanks for the responses so far.

I have been wondering how to investigate further what might be the cause of this behaviour, and am now thinking (via the process of elimination) that it must be some form of hardware breakdown.

I've installed NickelMenu (nice!) and am looking at seeing if there is some form of diagnostic / benchmark type of query that I can use to verify if it is a hardware issue - at least I'd know it was kaput then.

NiLuJe or geek1011 - any pointers on that approach?

Have you tried a good clean around the edges of the screen?

Ah - hadn't thought of that either.

I just gave the IR transparent shiny black plastic inside the bezel around the perimeter of the screen a very good clean but unfortunately that has not helped either.

Thanks for the idea though!

I assume you've already fully factory reset it, so it's probably not software, but if you want to double-check that, see if it behaves the same way in KOReader or Plato.

Hi, yes - have done a full factory reset which did not make a difference.

I've also tried KOReader which seems just as slow which makes me think it is hardware that is the issue.

Follow up

Just to close this out - It's now one month later and for the last two weeks my old Glo HD has been behaving normally again.

I have not made any additional changes since swapping out the SD card and updating to FW ver 4.26.16704 back at the end of July.

The behaviour changed back to 'normal' in the middle of a book, and so it wasn't an issue with a particular file (and I'd tried a bunch of different ones anyway).

So I have no idea what caused the issue, and no idea what fixed the issue but I'm very happy to have it back, and thanks again to everyone who suggested things to try.
