Import duty on Kobo devices UK?

Apologies if this would be more suitable in the Kobo forum, but it's not actually concerning the device itself.

So, I ordered a Kobo Elipsa from the Kobo UK store. It was dispatched from the Netherlands, to the UK, and arrived about a week ago. Today, I received an invoice from FedEx for the sum of £88.25 to cover "import duty/VAT paid by Fedex, or clearance charges, or both".

Has anyone else in the UK had this? I was under the impression that taxes (etc) were included in the price charged by Kobo!

I contacted the Kobo chat help, who said their team would deal with it and to ignore the FedEx invoice. So, I would advise anyone else who receives a FedEx invoice to contact the Kobo help service.

Thanks for that. The chat option came up (which I used), but I didn't know they had a service number too.

An update: after ignoring the invoice from FedEx, as advised by Kobo customer services, I have now received a demand from a debt recovery agency. Good old Kobo.

the email scammers are getting very good with their phoney email demands.
it is called 'Phishing' please notify your email service provider about your concerns
that this email is in-fact a "Phishing" scam email.
Common counterfeit email examples are Paypal & FedEx .
I know the official Hotmail users web site has a select email title then right click menu "Security Option / Phishing" option to mark the email for inspection/verification and if they find it is counterfeit
then they will automatically block all emails from the "Phishing" email sender address
from being sent to your email account.

please ,please only lookup phone number in the official UK telephone book
to call the genuine UK Kobo headquarters & talk with a official UK Kobo human representative .

my apologies .I had thought that you have received the " FedEx invoice" via Email.
so you say that you received the supposed genuine " FedEx invoice" via snail mail?..

you are not a FedEx customer.
you are only a destination/address for the delivery of the 'local/domestic Kobo UK store' purchased Kobo reader .
It's only a possibly that Kobo is their customer.

Just "ignore the invoice from FedEx, as advised by Kobo customer services",

It still sounds like a scam letter.£88.25 to cover "import duty/VAT"??????????
"I have now received a demand from a debt recovery agency."

I think that you should now go and 'ask & show' all 'letters' at your local police station or
to your local courthouse magistrate
state that you purchased the Kobo Reader from your local/domestic Kobo UK store and you have 'fears of possible fraudulent action' by the letter writers of both the suspicious " FedEx invoice" letter
and also the suspicious " 'letter of demand' from debt recovery agency"
State that you were advised by Kobo customer services to ignore the invoice from FedEx.
Ask helpful police/magistrate for advisement ...

Or you know call the UK Kobo customer service number which Jon posted. I might not always agree with what Jon states as facts, but this one is actually true and easily verified if you look on Kobos website.

I have already done that. They said the same thing that the text chat did: ignore it. When I pointed out that I could not ignore a letter from a debt management company, they said that they would "escalate it" and get back to me.

Yes, snail mail invoice. It may be a screw up by either FedEx or Kobo, but it's genuine. The original FedEx invoice contains the delivery information that was on the package, and the debt management letter contains the info from the FedEx invoice.

Did you call FedEx and tell them that Kobo said "ignore it"? Maybe they can reach out to Kobo?

No, the letter from the debt management company said that communication should go through them, so I gave them a call. I explained the situation, and the guy on the phone said that they'd had a few other calls with the same problem. So they are referring it back to FedEx with the details, and said if I don't hear anything else it's been cancelled by FedEx. So, fingers crossed.

The "advice" from Kobo customer service was worth than useless. I should have contacted FedEx with the details upon receiving the invoice, but you live and learn.
