Convert .mobi highlights to .epub?
I have a few extensively highlighted and annotated .mobi books for which I also have the .epub books. Is there any utility which would allow me to transfer all of the hundreds of .mobi highlights and annotations to my .epub books? My impression is that .mobi highlights and annotations are stored in a separate file which is linked to the actual .mobi book. I'm not as familiar w the .epub format, so have no idea if this can be done. This is for my personal use to allow access to the same reference materials on both my Kindle devices and my Sony .epub reader. Any help here? My search of the forum was not encouraging me to think so. Thanks.

It is not possible to move Kindle highlights to your Sony or anything else. The only thing you can do is view your highlights on the Kindle and make the same highlights elsewhere manually.

The annotations do not have to be viewed on a kindle. They can be exported multiple different ways, including having amazon email them to you in PDF and CSV. https://the-digital-reader.com/2020/...d-export-them/ And if anyone ever wants to produce a snazzy notes and highlights application, jhowell's KRDS is a good foundation to build on. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=322172 |

J.P.S.,
Thanks. The link you provided shows a screenshot of a Calibre option to "Fetch Annotations (experimental)" which appears promising. Haven’t looked into it, but will and will report back when I have something to say. |

One issue is that there is no standard for annotations / highlights across different ePub platforms, so finding a generic solution will be challenging.

The question is not viewing the highlights on a Kindle, the question is importing the highlights from the Kindle and then exporting them to his Sony ereader. At this time, I do not know of any method for automating this process.

I was adressing the claim that viewing the highlights on a kindle is a necessary part of the process. |

Is there enough information in the PDF or CSV to be able to find where in the ePub the highlights belong to manually add them?

KRDS works for KFX, but I'm not aware of anything that uses that to provide anything to put KFX notes and highlights in context or event extract the text of KFX highlights. |

One interesting thing that Amazon did out of necessity is come up with a way to have highlights and annotations be transferrable between copies of a book in different formats. They needed to be able to do that in order to have highlights work for customers owning a variety of devices that might be used to read the same book in MOBI, KF8, AZK, KCR, and KFX formats. Each of those formats have their own method for identifying the position of text within a book.
As far as I can tell they do it by building a file for each format that maps plain text to that format's positioning system and then matching the text between formats to find the corresponding position identifiers across formats. The same technique can also be used to map positions from the current book content to a new revision when the publisher updates the book to make minor changes or fix typos. That allows the book to be updated while keeping highlights/annotations in the correct place. It would be interesting if someone came up with a similar method to map annotations between different reading platforms. It would take a lot of research and work to accomplish. |
