How about e.book?
In the discussions about how to spell eBook/ebook/e-book I haven't seen a suggestion I really liked.
eBook is a horrid computer-tech spelling, and doesn't work at the start of sentences; ebook looks like it's pronounced ebbuk; e-book is just odd -- e is hardly a word in its own right to be made into a compound with a hyphen. Electronic Book is what we mean - so why not using the standard notation for an abbreviation -- and use e.book. E.book even works well as the first word in a sentence. |

As long as people understand your meaning (which is why I prefer to avoid "eReader", with its ambiguity), use whatever you like. Any attempt to "legislate" on the matter is doomed to failure

I personally use "ebook" and at the start of a sentence "Ebook." I just treat it like a normal word. It's a new word, but just a word and I don't think it really requires anything special like a hyphen or a period.

Honestly, I would consider the grammar rules to be very fluid at the moment. If I am responding to a newbie in the "Introduce Yourself" forum, then I make sure to be as clear and concise as possible and use e-book vs p-book and try to refer to the device as "your reading device." In general threads such as this one, ebook and pbook convey my message without causing confusion.
However, in the Llounge, it is a thingy and it reads books. Anyone foolhardy enough to venture there will figure it out from context, if any context should occur. |

E-book would probably be the most accurate. But ebook and eBook are the ones being used by the majority of users (including me) and developers so that is the one that will most likely win out. I would find e.book to be more of a tech spelling then ebook or e-book.
Ebook is also one of the few words of that nature that I don't despise, I generally hate any of the eWords, iWords and xWords so popular today. Every new product or marketing term that uses that format I tend to wish they'd stick it in their aWord. -MJ |

Don't like adding your proposed period punctuation. As a fast reader, I find that disrupts my visual flow in a way none of the other variants do.

e.book looks to me more like a brand name than a generic category name. ereader could have been (may again be) a good descriptive word for a device that allows one to read electronic books and I use it only to reference a specific format of ebooks that was once called read on Palm devices when an ancestor of the current format was called Palm Doc.
I think ebook will emerge as the winner because it is the cleanest form of the term. Like the "e-mail", e/mail", "email", "e.mail", "eMail", etc battle of some years ago, I expect the other forms will just quietly die away and be forgotten. English is a dynamic language where the users determine what words will survive and which words will simply wither and die. |

Even though I despise it, I think "eBook" will probably be the winner. eWhatever is very popular right now.

How about just calling them, you know, books.
Printed books will be "that old brown thing that people used to read from"... ![]() |

eBook is easiest for me. When I tell a non-techie about eBooks, they instantly get the concept of an electronic book. Explaining eInk...now that's a different story.
