EBook Reader with Support for Sinhala
Hi All,
This is somewhat related to another thread I posted (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=338158) , but I posted it on the Tolino forum, but I think it fits best here, because it's about switching to a different reader. I couldn't find a way to move that thread to this forum, so I am creating a new post so that I can get pinons from users of other readers as well. Hope this is not against the rules of the forum. As I mentioned in the other thread, I want to convert html which has Sinhala text into eBooks and read it in an e-reader. For those who are willing to try out an example, https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...ygLi67_F9Y_X1N is the link to a small book with Sinhala text. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/at...2&d=1616206141 is a correct display of the text. In the tolino forum two people answered me that Kobo and Likebook P6 can show the embedded font correctly, while tolino failed to render properly. Some other things which are good to have 1. has a web browser which can also render Sinhala text such as https://www.thripitakaya.org/tipitak...ex/160?s=10001,( also has some JavaScript) 2. Light to read in the dark 3. Good battery life. If you try the linked book in one of your readers could you also please share a screenshot with me? Last edited by pubudupg; 03-20-2021 at 06:29 AM. |

I opened it on my Kobo Libra, first in the default Kobo app, then in KOReader. I had to take a photo of the Kobo app, as enabling screenshots disables the power button. I hope the attached images are helpful.

I should add that the Kobo shot was with no modification to the displayed font at all, the KOReader was after making it bold and adjusting the contrast - the unadjusted Kobo actually looks better than the unadjusted KOReader did

My old Kindle Paperwhite 2 apparently rendered the KFX version of the book correctly, after enabling the Publisher Fonts option, however, the web browser displayed fallback characters instead of Sinhala glyphs.
I also noticed that KindleGen does not support the Sinhala language code (si): Code:
Error(prcgen):E23006: Language not recognized in metadata. The dc:Language field is mandatory. |

Thanks Uncle Robin and ottischwenk for the images. And nice find Doitsu! Maybe I can eke more out of the kindle before I switch to a newer reader. I will try out the KFX format.
I am also interested in seeing what the poketbook (https://pocketbook.de/de_de/e-reader...st_order=price) would show, if someone passing by has the device. |

Just as an experiment, I copied the fonts embedded in the epub file into the fonts directory on a Paperwhite and copied the .azw3 file into the documents directory. After selecting Noto Sans Sinhala as the book font, I did a screenshot which is attached to this message.

Now I am facing a new issue. The table of contents shows the the weird symbols again. The book content shows the correct text. I am on firmware version 5.13.5 (which is latest). Can you provide some insight on this? An example book is available at https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...ygLi67_F9Y_X1N. The book name is sn1-excerpt. https://ibb.co/pWwd11D is how the table of contents is shown to me.

For screenshots, using NickelMenu is a really good thing. You can enable screenshots, take them and then disable screenshots. All without having to edit the configuration.

Thanks JSWolf for offering to help. I uploaded a book to https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...ygLi67_F9Y_X1N, which has name `sn1-excerpt` which is in epub format and has a table of contents.
