Question My first crash on the PRS700.

Other than having to recharge my 700 more than anticipated, I'm very happy with it and all of it's functions.

I'm going to visit a friend tomorrow who has bad eyesite. The number of pbooks he can buy/borrow are limited. I thought I would show him what the larger fonts look like on the 700 and suggest that he buy it.

To test before I showed it to him, I loaded one of the free PDF ebooks provided by Adobe Digital Editions. I changed the font size and oriented the book for landscape, things were looking good. I turned to page 2 and the last 2 lines of page 1 were visible, yet washed out, at the top of the page. There were also many line gaps as I continued to read more pages. I thought the whole purpose of reflow was to take care of these annoyances! This made for a difficult read. I then tried to scan using the swipe and hold method which worked great. I then tried to use the go to page with slider bar option. Sliding the bar to the middle of the book (I assumed the reflow would take some time), the unit crashed and restarted.

I lost all the bookmarks of the books that I was reading. Fortunately that was only 2, yet it took me 15 minutes to find where I had left off reading in each book.

Anyone else have crashes on their new PRS700's please let me know.

I'm going to try and duplicate the crash on my PRS505 to see if it is device related...I will get back here later with the results.

I'm also going to see what happens when changing orientation and enlarging text using a book in Sony's format. I will get back here with those results also.

This reader or the 505 looked to be a good solution to my friends eyesite problems but now I am reluctant to suggest it.

Any thoughts, anyone...

And as Marc would say, Cheers

Thanks for that. We can borrow from the local/provincial library in MobiPocket format. I see that the Cybook is now licensed to sell in Canada. (At some time they wouldn't support warranty in Canada, but I guess they must now.)

This is an option, but I was hoping to show him in person what the text looked like, and since I don't own a Cybook I can't very well do that. I can direct him to the Cybook site to check on the specs though.

Thanks again.

I've had my 700 crash once. When it restarted I noticed that I had also lost a lot of bookmarks, but not all. The bookmarks that remained were from before the last time I did a full shut down of the 700, the bookmarks lost were ones created since then when I had only been doing "soft" shut downs. When you slide the power slider quickly this is a soft shut down almost like a stand-by, When you hold the power slider to the right for 3 seconds this is a full shut down. So now every now and then I make sure to do a full shut down just to ensure bookmarks, notes, and page positions are properly committed to memory in case of a crash (but I haven't had a crash since).

my 700 had a burp last night after i finish reading a book i delete it off my reader, this was like the 7th or 8th book ive done this too, and after it happened it said i had 0 books on my reader, the book marks were still there though (all book marks are for the book i just deleted) and the currently reading thing also said the book i just deleted.

i had to hard turn off and on, and when it came back.. the book marks were gone (which is what i wanted as i deleted the book, and bookmarks dissapear after the book is gone) and all the other books were left on the device correctly. so no harm no foul. just a burp and it didnt recreate the index of books i have on it i guess.

If you think it can help I can send you photos from a text showing the 12 sizes of the serif (or san serif) thy Cybook comes with.

Note: I just checked and you do not have private messages activated.

Hi Wetdogeared

I have decided to post the photos here instead to sending them to you (more about this later), so you, your friend and others can check them:

01.jpg - menu where it can be chosen one of the 12 sizes of a font (in Mobipocket), it’s Verdana the sans serif font original in the reader;

02.jpg - same menu, same reader, now with Georgia the serif font original in the reader;

03.jpg - same menu, same reader, now with a font I have made from my handwriting;

04.jpg - for the fun of it it’s a page of the demo Da Vinci Code eBook that comes with the reader but with the handwritten font mentioned in (3). The size of this font chosen for the photo is the size 6, so one could enlarge it more 6 times!

Note: you still appear as not having private messages or not allowing others to send to you, so one more reason to post the photos directly here.

Hi Igorsk

You are correct, I should have been more specific and say “in all the reflowing text formats the reader can read today, but not in PDF” (the unique readers that reflow PDF text files are the Sony 505 and the 700).

Still, I think Wetdogeared understood it was so, as he answered to my post with:
«Thanks for that. We can borrow from the local/provincial library in MobiPocket format. I see that the Cybook is now licensed to sell in Canada. (At some time they wouldn't support warranty in Canada, but I guess they must now.)»

One more thing, the same result (sort off) can be obtained in PDF because with the last firmware upgrade there are 6 levels of zoom to choose from (50%, 60, 80, 90 and 100%) the options fit page, fit width and fit height… and also one can apply all of them in portrait or landscape.
Some people are very pleased with this way of treating PDF’s, I myself find it almost useless, and have expressed myself several times all over the forum, for Bookeen to let us have reflowing text PDF’s (a la Sony), as I see that to be the best solution - have used it on the Acrobat reader for the Pocketpc for years (it exists since 2002!)
