Editor starts, but doesn't show the book

I see blank boxes where I used to see a list of the files in the book that I could open for editing. This is true opening directly with ebook-edit or from within calibre. I am running 5.9 on linux. I've tried running old versions but it doesn't fix the problem.

Click the view menu and unhide the files browser and preview panels.

I discovered this in an inspiration last night, but my post unfortunately was not available for me to let you know. I had the thought that you would know it right off the bat. Probably not the first time you have heard this problem. Thank you for this amazing program and for your kind response.
