Calibre sent AZW3 not showing correctly on Kindle.

Hi

I have a strange problem. I have a kindle Voyage dedicated to Fan Fiction. I use both docx and rtf to create my ebooks. I add a cover via the Calibre extension Create Cover, I then convert to AZW3 files.

I connect my Kindle via USB and using Calibre I send the AZW3 files to my Voyage. I have 100s of ebooks loaded and for 99% of them everything is fine, but now and again (today I sent 10 and my problem affects 6) the book appears on my kindle without a cover, and hardly any options, compared to a proper AZW3 file, for example i can't mark it as read. Its not marked as a personal doc, and I can bold fonts etc, so its like these books are a hybrid betterrn AZW3 and Mobi.

i'm really confused. I can't work out why its happening. Its very disconcerting. Has anyone any idea whats going on?

I don't know what might be causing this. If you post an AZW3 file that exhibits the problem I can take a look at the internal structure to see if I can see anything strange. You could use the ScrambleEbook plugin before conversion to AZW3 if it contains copyrighted material.

Thank you for your offer. I don't really understand file structures or any other plugin's so i'll just attach files to see of you can spot anything.

These two files were created in the same way, Welcome to Atlantis Part 2 works as an AZW3 on my Kindle, Prison, doesn't.

What version of Calibre are you using with what OS? Also, which firmware is on your Oasis?

Apologies, i should have added that. I am using 4.23. I can't use 5 as it affects the converting of Amazon files.

My Voyage is on 5.13.3

Here are some screen shots from my kindle. Different AZW3 files but the same issue.

The four ebooks shown (top two left are folders) are all identically calibre created AZW3 files. Two show correctly, with covers, and two don't. I've shown the file options as well, for one that's okay and one that's not. i hope this makes sense.

I've loaded these two eBook on my PW3 with 5.13.3. They do no work. I've tried converting to AZW3 and still no go. I tried converting to ePub and then the AZW3. Still no go.

I'll have a look at the code and see if anything looks wonky.

The difference between the two files is that the Atlantis book is marked internally as a regular book (CDETYPE=EBOK) while the Prison book lacks the CDETYPE metadata.

Selecting "Enable sharing of book contents..." in the "AZW3 output" section of the conversion dialog will cause the CDETYPE to be omitted. The will cause the file to be treated as a personal document and will prevent the cover thumbnail from being shown in the library view.

Thank you for looking. Any idea why the CDETYPE would be omitted from the convert process? And can I add it back in, do you think?

Both files were added as rtf. I then added a picture, I use the same ones mostly, a jpeg file, then I got the Calibre plugin to create the cover. Then the calibre convert process to convert to mobi, and then AZW3. I didn’t do anything different for the Prison book.

I have about 200 calibre created AZW3 files on my Voyage, this glitch affects about 12 of them.

I also wanted to say that I created two AZW3 files after the prison book today and they are fine. So it’s not like all of a sudden all files lack the CDETYPE file, it’s been two lots of 6 files, created a week apart. Files created before, after and between those files are fine. If you want to play I am happy to upload the rtf files and the JPEGs, if you’d like.

I have the same files on my PW4, and they are acting the same as on the Voyage.

Check the conversion setting I mentioned in my post. Make sure it is unchecked and convert again.

Thank you so much. The CDETYPE was ticked for all 12 books i had an issue with. I have now changed the preferences to ensure this file type is unticked. I have no idea why for those books it was ticked but maybe it was because of the order i converted to both mobi and azw3. It won't be a problem anymore so thanks again for your help.

I've done some editing of the code for Prison and it's working now. So there is something in the code that's causing the problem with these two eBooks. It's not the CDETYPE setting. And Calibre 5.9.0 works no problem with this once I've edited to the code.

I'll have a go at editing the code again from the original so I can try to find out just what the problem is.
