Cannot connect my H2O to new MacBook Pro with Apple M1 chip.
Have just purchased a new Apple MacBook Pro which has the M1 chip. This new MacBook Pro will not recognise my Kobo ereader. Apple are no help and I have not as yet received a response from Kobo.
My question is: Does anyone have a new MacBook Pro with the M1 chip and if so does their ereader connect to it? Last edited by Seth H; 12-18-2020 at 09:40 PM. Reason: Clarifying the nature of my query |

Have you tried a USB 2.0 hub? Sometimes they can be unreliable with USB 3.0 ports.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I only have USB3 to Lightning adapters. I have however tried two different adapters, one being the genuine Apple adapter.

It's the port, not the chip. My Kobo won't connect to my Dell laptop with only USB-C ports either. I'm probably going to get that USB2 hub.

I can connect to an Intel chip MacBook Pro using a USB 3 connection so I don't believe USB 3 is an issue for me.

My Windows 10 Laptop has USB 3 ports and I've connected my H2O to them with no problem.
From what I've read on MR about OS X, it could be some security feature that needs to be changed. |

It’s a USB C problem. Last edited by Gone; 12-18-2020 at 08:39 PM. |

If you have a MacBook Air (2017) then you have an Intel chip and there is no issue with connecting a Kobo. My query specifically relates to a MacBook Pro with an Apple M1 chip. This MacBook Pro was only released by Apple several weeks ago.

Using two different adapters. I don't have a USB C to Apple Lightning cable. Don't even know if they are made. Using these same adapters I can connect my Kobo to a recent MacBook Pro that has an intel chip. What I can not do is connect to a new MacBook Pro that has the new Apple M1 chip. These have only been available for several weeks.

Wanted to chime in that I am having the same problem. Can't connect my H2O to my new M1 MacBook Air w/ Big Sur no matter what I do. Have tried everything from factory resets, many different cables and adapters, a direct USB-C to micro-USB cable, booting into safe mode, and creating test user accounts. Even did a complete clean install of Big Sur, still no dice. This exact same H2O was working perfectly on my previous laptop, a 2013 MacBook Pro also running Big Sur. So it was the switch to the M1-chipped computer that started the problem.
I have been in contact with Kobo support and they have no idea why it's not working. But I'm not sure they have an M1 computer to test on. Meanwhile all the old tricks like resetting the SMC are not valid on these newer computers. So for now I'm at a dead end. |

I have found a partial work around that enables me to load books onto the Kobo. I take the mini SD card out of the Kobo and insert it into the Lightning hub (I have one of those hubs with multi ports). Calibre recognises the SD card and I can then load books as if the Kobo was connected. When finished I eject the SD card and reinsert it in the Kobo. |

I was just saying that it’s not a MacOS security problem.
