number of pages... mystery!

hi to everybody.
i read a large number of ebooks and in each book (read from ipad with ibooks) i see at the bottom of the page, the number of pages remaining in the chapter and the number of total pages in the book. like this example:

in one book i don't see this data... i think this data is missing in .ncx or .opf files or container.xml. suggestion?

The number of pages is not set anywhere inside the book. It is calculated based on screen and font size. If you change the font size, you'll see the number of pages changing accordingly.

This particular book may be malformed/corrupted in someway. Open it in the editor and check for errors (Check Book and Epubcheck).

How the pages are displayed depends on what program is being used. If you use RMSDK (ADE) then the page numbers will not change when you change the font size. But if you use Books then the page number will change with a font size change. ADE page numbers are the most accurate page numbers for ePub (unless a page map is used).

The OP expressly stated that iBooks was used:

iBooks recalculates the page count every time you change the font size. Also, using different screen sizes will affect it too.

i use calibre editor for so many years... on this ebook no error detected.
and thiago.eec you're right: if I change the font size the pages are detected, as it should be. no problem.
only problem (i don't understand why) on my default font dimension, set for each ebook, this count does not appear...! only at this specified font dimension and only with this ebook..!

Perhaps window size would have been a better choice of words unless you always read full screen.

I really meant screen sizes. There are various iPad models, and their screen size may vary. This is true for iBooks in general, as it is also present on iPhones.

But I agree, window sizes are more general, since iBooks can also be used on macOS.

Yes, iPads do have different screen sized. 7.9", 9.7", 10.5" 11", and 12.9". All different screen sizes. And then there are different iPhone screen sizes.

So yes, page numbers for Books is a real mess.

Sorry. I didn't know that. My iPad is kind of old. It's been a long time since it was updated (so, the app here is still called iBooks).

I only use it for Children Books, to read to my son.

I think when we refer to iBooks/Books, we should mention what OS the iPad is running so we know what's being used.

The number of iPads that don't run iOS would be iNfinitesimal

There are many iPads that don't run iOS. They run iPadOS.

ok, that's all.
anyway it's really strange how only in this book, reading with my usual font (i change the font size from caliber editor, not from the Books app, here i always leave the same setting) the page count is not displayed. if i change the font size in Books it works, but with my usual font size, it doesn't work. really curious ...
