Troubleshooting Kindles no WiFi connection so transferring by USB problem

I have 2 old kindles 2011. But the Internet connection has stopped working on them.
I can add books i have already and read on the kindle still.

Been using transfer by USB and adding books to calibre, hich has worked very well.

However during the past few days I have found that some ebooks will convert no problem
But others say drm.
If I keep trying and download maybe 3 copies eventually it will work.
I can't figure out why, don't seem to have done anything different

What version of calibre are you running? Calibre 5 breaks the DeDRM plugin. Are you always using the same Kindle serial number for your download or have you entered the serial numbers for both your Kindles in calibre? Download and transfer via USB locks the downloaded book to the serial number of the Kindle you specify in the download.

I replaced my Kindle a few months ago, and have configured the Apprentice Alf plugin with the new serial number. I have just bought some books from Amazon for the first time since I got the new Kindle and downloaded them as AZW3, and then did what I normally do -- added them to my Calibre library and tried to convert them to EPUB so I can read them on my phone as well. The conversion failed with a "locked by DRM" error message.

I'm using Calibre 4.15 (pending a new version of the DeDRM plugin) and DeDRM 6.6.0. I download a DRMed book from elsewhere and I can convert it, and I've double-checked the Kindle serial number (cut & pasted it from Amazon). Can anyone tell me what I should do to fix this?

Calibre 4.15
I have downloaded 4 books today through USB
3 of them said DRM.
But I downloaded them 4 or 5 more times and eventually the last copies worked!
Think I am missing something somewhere Dont know what though.

Serials numbers entered where? Is that why?

When you download from Amazon, you need to select which kindle it will be for. They DRM it for that particular kindle. Any chance you were downloading for the old kindle, initially?

I have both kindles registered with amazon.
As the 1st one lost internet connection & forever charging.
So got 2nd one which is doing the same.
Books will download to my pc with both ok But when I add them to calibre they show DRM
Only the past few days though
If I keep downloading more copies via Usb eventually 1 works.
Am I supposed to register my kindle with the DRM plug in?
Cant figure out what I am doing wrong.
It cant be anything much as some books work ok

Should I have set one kindle as default device?
Even though it goes via usb straight to pc and I can then put it on either kindle?

In Callibre these books should be automatically available to read and add to Kindle. Maybe you have to check the settings in Callibre itself to remove DRM and format it to the Kindle of interest?

Yes. Go to Preferences -> Plugins, select the plugin, press Configure, and put in your Kindle serial number.

And then always do the "download to use with USB" (from Amazon) for THAT kindle, so that the DRM can be recognized.
