Simple and easy way to get books from Calibre

I'm a long time Calibre user who never own any physical ebook readers until now .
Just got my Libra H2O from Prime Day, so far quite happy with it.
Played around and loaded couple of books from my laptop via USB, that's OK.
Then discovered this simple and easy way, love it! So I said to myself I have to share it... .

What do you need

Nothing! Of cause you have got a running Calibre somewhere on your home network already, WiFi accessible, and the Content Server service is running, and you knew its IP address and port.

How to connect

On your Libra which is WiFi connected to the same network as Calibre.
  • Touch More at the right-bottom of the screen
  • Touch Beta Features
  • Find WEB BROWSER and touch Start
You will get the initial google page... ignore it but type in the IP address and port of the Calibre Content Server, something looks like this
    Code:
    http://192.168.0.1:8081
  • If the URL is correct, the library page is trying to load...but stuck since Libra's browser doesn't support JavaScript...no panic
Calibre knows that... and tells you to try non_JavaScript version
  • Touch here... whala, all your books are there
  • Touch the book's type label to download the book to Libra
That's it!

Note:
  • The URL in the screenshot is just my settings, replace it with your own
  • This method is super convenient with Calibre runs with container on a headless server since there is no easy way to hook Libra up with the computer physically

I prefer to simply plug my device in and send the books via Calibre.
That allows metadata to write to the database directly.

Calibre is great though. NiLuJe and davidfor here on the forums are both big contributors to the project.

Seems like a lot of work compared to just connecting the Kobo via usb and telling Calibre to send the book(s) to it. Also, calibre displays which books are already on the Kobo, and it updates the series information (although you have to disconnect and reconnect the Kobo), and other stuff as well.

I use the same process without Calibre to sideload my books wirelessly with FTP or an FTP app which works from phone.

After initial connection, you can bookmark the link as Favorites or set it as Home page, so next time you can get there with just 1 or 2 touches...

Heck. No need to even visit it once and bookmark. Just configure NickelMenu to open a browser with that URL.

For done time I'd used an calibre opds container on my qnap to serve up both my and my wife's libraries to opds compliant android cluents.

Now I've migrated to another solution using calibre-web in containers on my qnap. My router is configured to forward external traffic to the container, and I use freefilesync to monitor my calibre library on the PC and mirror it to the qnap.

I now have a solution I can access both at home and on the road from either a Kobo or Android opds client.

As a fresh owner of Libra, I'm not ready to tinker the brand new device yet... As long as I can get my book on the device I'm OK. I used to read on my phone or tablet, hence I already have my library up there already.

One final tip, if you have not yet discovered it:

append "/mobile" to the end of your URL and avoid the java script bit.

And is also the only charging my PW3, DXG, Keyboard and Kobo Libra get most of the time. I software disconnect and leave it charging while I work.

Hi

That sounds very interesting. Could you please describe in more detail what you do to transfer books with ftp ?

Thanks.

Another alternative to this is sherman's Kobo-UNCaGED, which allows Calibre to manage the Kobo remotely.

In addition, thanks to work by @shavitmichael, calibre-web (the third-party project, not the built-in Calibre server) can act as a fake sync server.

Hi

I tried Kobo-Uncaged (0.4.1) with NickelMenu (no kfmon).
My menu item looks like this
menu_item:main:KU : cmd_spawn :/mnt/onboard/.adds/kobo-uncaged/scripts/start_ku.

I start WiFi on my Kobo and then KU and get the popup that process successfully started. When I activate "wireless device connection" in Calibre , nothing happens.

Anything else I need to configure ?

Thanks for your help.

The current UNCaGED release won't work on current FW versions, IIRC, you'll have better luck with a custom build from the WIP-but-nearly-done rework straight from GitHub .

Ok - I guess I will have to wait with this then.

In the meantime I tried my luck with caliber-web. I can load the webpage on my iPad and access calibre . The webpage won’t load on my Kobo. Any idea why ? (Is the web page too sophisticated for the Kobo Auto H2O?)
