Calibre starting problem after update

I've just downloaded the newest update of calibre, but suddenly it won't start up. As in, it's not even listed in the system monitor process list. It just won't start up without giving out any messages.

I thought I'd try running it from the terminal, so as to get error messages that way, but this is the message I get:

Code:
qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin "xcb" in "" even though it was found.
This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Available platform plugins are: eglfs, linuxfb, minimal, minimalegl, offscreen, vnc, wayland-egl, wayland, wayland-xcomposite-egl, wayland-xcomposite-glx, xcb.

Aborted (core dumped)
Yes, I get that apparently Qt is to blame. But still I'm not sure what exactly the problem is, considering literally five minutes earlier it didn't exist?

To quote from Kovid Goyal's response to someone who had a very similar error.

I tried re-installing, but had no joy- I still got the same error message.

Any ideas?

, DNSB!

Somehow I didn't see that thread, or I would have tried that first before I posted mine. Oops.

It did actually work, so no starting problems anymore. Yay!

But I'm still left baffled. Why now so suddenly? Did calibre not require that dependency previously or something? Because presumably, it was missing on my PC all along anyway, and yet calibre still worked?

I seem to remember that what Kovid said is that the version of QT used by calibre has been updated and some of the new prerequisites are not installed by default.

I would guess that the linux os you are using is past end of life and is no longer getting updates. My recommendation is to go to DistroWatch and check.

if it is past end of life then upgrade to the latest version, the improvements in the Mesa video driver are well worth it.

Yeah, you have a point there. That might well be the case. I have been dragging my feet about updating from the 16.04 distro I currently have, simply because while I'm at it, I'd feel obligated to either clean up and organise better my harddisk or replace it with another one and I'm too lazy to do so at the moment. I should probably stop procrastinating on that point.

Warning: Ignoring XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland on Gnome. Use QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland to run on Wayland anyway.
