Since Calibre 5.01 newly purchased Kindle books will not Open

Unfortunately I had Calibre on autoupdate, and my prior version got wiped out.
Worse than not having DDRM work, no newly purchased books, since Calibre 5.01, load at all on my Kindle. A week or two ago everything worked beautifully. Here is the message I get with any new book transfer to my keyboard Kindle:

This item cannot be opened because it is licensed to a different user.
Delete the item and download it again... or purchase a copy from the Kindle store.

Checking with Amazon Kindle shows my Kindle for PC is properly licensed. Nor do I believe that my Kindle has lost it's registration - but I don't know how to check that.
Kindle for PC (v 1. has no problems viewing the books at all and works fine just like before.

I almost forgot to mention that on occasion it appears that the transfer from Calibre to the Kindle does not even show up.

I also tried the advice of installing Calibre v 4.23 Portable which worked fine, until I attempted to install appropriate DDRM, not only does the install fail, but Calibre no longer even opens even though prior to DDRM it opened and displayed all of the books in my Calibre Library. If I did not wish to transfer any new books from Calibre to Kindle, or tried to read them with Calibre, I would not be aware of any issues. Of course the DRM prevents me from putting any of the cookbooks which has lots of photos onto my iPad using EPub conversion. Yes I know there are other formats and ways to load books onto the iPad.

So, I'm asking:

1) If anyone else has the same Kindle issues as I described? Any solutions ?

2) I would be happy to uninstall Calibre v 5.01, and simply replace it with v 4.23 and install DDRM. However I cannot find a specific Calibre uninstall file, so I would have to see if Windows shows one. Normally I use Revo Uninstaller but I'm concerned I might remove some of my additional organizational Genre Labeling settings (that would be disastrous and take weeks to recreate).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

Yeah, that's the problem with autoupdate it discourages reading release notes - I assume you're using one of the third party scripts.

The deDRM doesn't work with calibre 5, there's a thread about it at the top of the main calibre forum. And don't install the deDRM beta on github, it'll only make things worse.

Uninstall 5.01 via control panel, your settings and libraries will stay in place, then install 4.23. Then disable the autoupdate and watch 'this space'.

I dropped Revo when I ditched XP in 2009, haven't missed it.

@drdancm what are you running that auto-updated Calibre? Calibre on it's own does not auto-update. So do yourself a huge favor and dump whatever garbage you are running that auto-updated Calibre.

homebrew auto-updated Calibre on my Mac, but I wouldn't call homebrew garbage.

PortableApps platform can auto-update its apps on Windows, but I wouldn't call that garbage.

Over-inclusive, broad-sweeping generations on the other hand...

I call any program that adds auto-update garbage. How do you know you want the newer version? Calibre 4.23 to Calibre 5 should not be auto-updated. That should be done manually. Also, KindleForPC should never be auto-updated.There are others.

So yes, auto-updaters are garbage and should be deleted.

From your description it seems that you are importing books from Kindle for PC into calibre and then later sending them from calibre out to a Kindle device.

Kindle DRM is specific to each app or device and books cannot just be copied from one to another even if they belong to the same Amazon account. DRM removal is needed to make that possible, so it is likely that something is going wrong with DRM removal during import of the books into calibre.

Assistance with DRM removal is not allowed here on MobileRead. I suggest asking for help at either Apprentice Alf's Blog or Apprentice Harper's GitHub.

DRM removal is not working because the DeDRM plugin is not yet fully converted to work with Calibre 5.

Heimdal Security. Worse yet, the crap used to disable any update setting in the past, but now it fails when you click on the item. I used to update manually as soon as Calibre had a new version, so I thought, why not do the autoupdate. By the time I read about the DDRM issues with 5, it was too late.
Those of use who don't visit this forum unless we have a question will not know about all these issues. Reading the release note about plugins, which was too late for me anyway, did not list DDRM .

I had started using DDRM so many years ago, that I completely forgot that transfers did not work prior to it, if I understand what you are saying -namely that Calibre never was able to transfer to Kindle books purchased and imported via Kindle for PC.

One last question:

Is Python always included with Calibre or does the appropriate version have to be downloaded and installed ?

Thanks for your help.

Dan

Yes, it is. Calibre is self-contained.

Thanks for informing me. I wasn't sure because some messages I read in the past went into detail about where to find the appropriate versions of Python to download and install.

I'm happy to report that all is well after I uninstalled using Windows Apps Menu, and then re-installed one of the earlier 4.xx versions -I did not even have to re-install any of my plugins, they just were there.

Now everything works as it should. Calibre is one of the absolute best things I've ever used to make my life work better. I'm now going to give another donation to the ingenius, and kind Kovid Goyal.

My heartfelt thanks to all the generous people who messaged with helpful information.

Keep Safe,

Dan
