Troubleshooting Kindle Paperwhite loses account/library information?

While traveling this weekend, I was reading a book (Heretics of Dune if that's relevant), and when I went to turn a page my Kindle got stuck at "Calculating Reading Speed" instead of turning the page for some reason.

Holding down the power button resulted in a restart of the unit w/o any account information and nothing in the library.

The weird thing is, when I checked on Amazon.com the device was no longer there, and when I got home, it still had the router information loaded --- I plugged in my Amazon account information and did the 2-factor authentication (I use my home phone) and it's now d/l'ing my library.

Any ideas on what could have caused this or how to avoid it?

The same happened to me on monday! I was reading a book at night (connected to WiFi). In the morning i couldn't turn the pages... I thought it was stuck so I tried to close the book and open it again, but my library was empty

My kindle had deregistered or something. I had to register my kindle again and of course all my files on the documents folders were gone.

My guess was that it updated at night and something went wrong

How to avoid it? Two ways:

Keep wifi off
Sideload your books

Admittedly that's not the way most people want to use their Kindles. I get that.
