Error message when connecting reader

So, I had to replace my Glo HD with this new Clara HD.

Now I notice that I still sometimes get an error message when connecting also the Clara reader to my laptop (Win10). I thought it only had to do with my old Glo HD, since I had maybe done to many changes or that the usb connector started to get bad. But since it now also happens with my new Clara HD with the usb cable from the box, it must have something to do with my computer.

The message is that there is a problem with the unit and I should browse and repair it. It still gets visible in Calibre. I run the error search and repair, but then Windows says that it's nothing wrong with the unit.

Anyone knows what it can be?

ON my Glo HD it happened very frequently and sometimes it didn't appear in Calibre at all. With my new Clara HD it happens every 7 time or so and it still always become visible in Calibre. Even though it works, it's very annouying.

The message is letting you know that the "dirty bit" is set on the drive. I used to get this a great deal on my Kobo's regardless of how careful I was in removing them from my PC. (The safe remove external drive stuff).

I normally would allow Windows to do its scan / repair of the drive.

However a few Kobo releases ago some of the Linux components of the firmware were updated and since then I've had no reocurrences of the issue.

I also used to get that with my KA1 on my Windows 10 PCs, but haven't had it happen in a long time. The Windows scan/repair always solved the problem.

What do you mean by the "dirty" bit i set on the drive?

The strange thing is that Wondows doesn't find any problem with my Clara after the scan. That is, nothing to repair, which I find strange. And it at least always get connected and appears in the Explorer tree menu and in Calibre.

On my old dead Glo HD it sometimes didn't even get connected and didn't appear in the Explorer tree menu or Calibre. Had do unplug/plug it several times to get it working. That's why I thought it was something wrong with the usb connector on the reader, getting old etc

Basically, the dirty bit means that changes have been made but not yet committed to disk. When a device is safely ejected, this bit should be cleared.

Quote:
A volume's dirty bit indicates that the file system may be in an inconsistent state. The dirty bit can be set because:
  • The volume is online and it has outstanding changes.
  • Changes were made to the volume and the computer was shut down before the changes were committed to the disk.
  • Corruption was detected on the volume.
