Overdrive on Multiple Kobos

I have both an Aura One and a Forma. I've been reading library books for a couple of years now, most recently on the Forma. I became curious about whether I could read the same library book on either device, and quickly learned that it would only appear in readable form on one. On the Aura One, it appears but with the notation 'expired.' So lately I've read on the Forma.

My question: If I'd like to read a specific library book on the Aura One instead of the Forma, is there any way to do this? I tried downloading a book directly from within the Aura One and the software told me I had borrowed the book. But again, it appeared as 'expired' on the Aura One, but was complete and readable on the Forma.

Any insights into how Kobo handles this would be appreciated. I seem to have the Forma as the default library reader, but I have no idea how this occurred.

That should work. And I have done it in the past. And Kobo have explicitly stated this is allowed. Can you check the dates on the device, especially the Aura ONE, to make sure they are correct.

A bit odd. I just tested with my Forma and an Aura HD. Borrowed a library book and synced it to my Forma and no issues reading it. Synced the Aura HD and the library book showed up there and was showing the same 6 days to expiry as the Forma.

Odd, and DNSB also just said that reading a library book on both devices works for him. I just tested again on mine, downloaded a library book as usual (I use Libby for this, but have done the same directly with the Kobo device). I can read on the Forma, but the book, while showing up on the KA1, is marked 'expired.'

I did check to verify that the date on each device is correct. This really has me stumped.

When Overdrive gets out of sync, either repair the device (settings>device information>repair your Kobo account) or sign out of Overdrive, then sign back in. Worse case scenario, log out of your device entirely, then log back in. When I run into issues, one of those three methods sets me right.

It should work – it works with my older Kobos when I borrow a book with my Aura 2. When I've had issues like this on my Kobos, logging out has worked the couple times I needed to do it (as Cootey suggests).

I like the logging out option over the repair option, and will try it today. Thanks to both who have suggested it.

No luck. I logged out and then back in to Overdrive. Tried to download a book, and indeed the following sync did find it and downloaded something. But when I found the book, it said 'expired' on it and asked if I wanted to put a hold on it at the library. Frustrating...

Since logging out of Overdrive did not solve my problem -- able to read library books on only one of my two Kobo devices -- I'm thinking about doing the 'repair account' option. Question: I assume the 'repair' is only relevant to the device I trigger it on. In other words, does 'repair' change anything at the account end, or simply reload the device I'm repairing? I've got my Forma working just fine and don't want to compromise it, while I do want to repair my KA1 so I can read library books on it, as I used to do.

Have you tried logging out of your Kobo account on the device? If there is a problem with the database on the device, that should fix it.

From the Repair Account pop up:

"Repairing your Kobo account refreshes all of your books and collections. You should only repair your account if something is missing or not working properly. if you have a lot of books this may take a while."

I'm not sure what it exactly means by "refreshing", but I can say I've run it on devices which were working fine and had no issue. I suspect the warning is there to keep the requests to Kobo's servers down. I'll also say that doing this did not affect any other Kobo i had/have (and I did have multiple signed in to the same account at the time, still do actually).

I'd think your options are

1) repair account

2) log out of Kobo account and back in

3) perform a reset on the device, and here I'll apologize as I'm not sure which reset wipes the user partition. But that's the one you'd want to do.

I've put these options in order from least negatively impactful to most. Repairing your account shouldn't negatively impact anything, all your books will remain, annotations (notes/highlights) will remain, etc. Logging out of your device will I believe wipe those annotations out, and I think you'll have to redownload your books (side loaded should be fine but the device will need to re-import them which it'll do once you've registered again. Resetting would toss everything in the bin and you'd start from scratch, any side loaded books would need to be side loaded again, all your Kobo purchased books would need to be re-downloaded, all your annotations would be gone.

I've just tested OD on my two Formas and my Aura H2O v1 (which doesn't even have OD support but due to the way Kobo handles OD is still able to download the borrowed book) and all three devices work perfectly with OD stating the same time remaining.

If none of the above works, I'd suggest either posting back here with a step by step process of how you're getting the library book on both devices (it sounds silly i know but if I had a dollar for every time this resolved a seemingly unsolvable issue I'd be much better off.

This is good advice -- thanks to all of you. I'm going to start with the repair option, as per MGlitch, and see what happens. I'll update the thread in case that would help others with Overdrive issues.

I used my KA1 for library books via Overdrive for a year or so before giving a new Forma a long shakeout, during which time I read library books on it as well as books I had downloaded. It was only when I went back to the KA1 that I realized library books I currently had available on the Forma were showing on the KA1 as 'expired.'

My usual method is to go through Libby, as I have two libraries that I borrow from, and it has worked flawlessly. But I also tried going through the KA1 itself, thinking there was some issue there with Libby. Same problem, no matter which access method I use.

Let's see what the repair option is. Thanks again.

OK, problem solved. Using the excellent advice, I tried the repair -- no luck there -- but then did the logout, login thing. That took care of the problem. I appreciate the help!
