Help with Auto-Merge Duplicates when (auto) Adding Books

I am having a little trouble getting this feature to work properly and I am not sure what is going on.

I have configured the Auto-Add from folder feature and set Calibre to Auto-Merge Books with the configuration Ignore duplicate incoming formats. I can see that Calibre detects the duplicates, because if I enable Check for duplicates when automatically adding files in the Automatic Adding configuration pane, I get warnings about the detected duplicates. After confirming that I still want to import the duplicates I see that they are still separate entries in the Calibre library. One other thing to note is that both copies of the book are being added during the same Auto-Import session (if that makes a difference).

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong here. Is the Auto-Merge not compatible with the Auto-Add or am I missing something?

IIRC auto merge is not implemented for auto-add. Would need to read the code to confirm.

After hours of testing all of the different auto-merge scenarios using Auto-add to figure out why the setting weren't working correctly, I am both glad and sad to see this.

To note, if looks like it works partially. It will add the new format to the existing book, but then it also creates a second record with only one format.

Also, I realize this is an old post, but it was the only one I could find that actually had anything definitive.

I'm fairly sure there is no auto merging at all in auto add. It can check for duplicates but that's it. It never merges, there is too much danger of data loss like that.

In my tests on the latest version, it would.

Library has book1 as .epub format. Auto-adding the same book as .mobi format.
Results in book1 having both .epub and .mobi formats, but a second record for the same book is also added as .epub.
