Idea: Swap Title/Author hotkey.

I find that after adding books to Calibre, I often need to do a "Swap Title and Author." Once in the "Edit metadata" form, it's possible to use Alt+Down. It would excellent if this could be triggered from the main Library window. (I mean without needing to open the 'Edit metadata' dialog.)

Or maybe this is possible and I missed it(?). -steve

Right after posting it occurred to me that I could do a series of hotkeys... I went to Preferences>Shortcuts, then set "Edit metadata individually" to Alt+/
I chose forward slash simply because it's near Down arrow.

This appears to work. Hold Alt, then press /, then Down. Release Alt and press Enter. Still, a single hotkey would be better.

Logical place to put an Author<->Title swap tool would be in the Quality Check plugin, all of its tools can have shortcuts, see Index of plugins.

Ask in the QC thread itself.

Title <-> Author tool is part of the MDE (single or bulk)

I don't think there is a foolproof way (QCPI) to detect when they are in the wrong place .
The QCPI: Check Metadata, does detect other field formatting issues, some you use Bulk MDE to repair or the FIX section of the QCPI

Thanks TheDucks. Yea, I wasn't expecting QC or Calibre to automatically detect when they're switched. Just to let me manually trigger the hotkey without having to open the "Edit metadata" tool.

MDE is "Metadata Editor?" If so, I think you can only swap Title <-> Author one book at a time though?

Just click the checkbox "Swap title and author" in the Bulk Metadata edit's Basic Metadata tab.

Bulk mode happens when MORE THAN ONE book is selected when invoked.

From what I've seen, bulk metadata edit will work on one book. Handy sometimes for a quick title/author swap, etc.

That is the Single MDE you show.. It as the swap icon.
Bulk MDE has a tick
How many books selected determines which mode is invoked

Not quite right. You can select one book and use the bulk metadata edit option or you can select 100 books in individual mode and step through them using the next/previous buttons. Take a look at the two screenshots attached to this message. One is for the single book MDE and has a swap icon circled. The other is for the same book but selecting Edit metadata in bulk and the checkbox for title/author and 1 books circled.

At times, I find doing multiple tasks easier from the bulk metadata edit -- check change title case to Title Case, check remove all for the tags, etc. Of course for real fun, nothing like using Search and Replace on your live library. Did I pack a parachute or an anvil?

How are you getting it to show the second image?
(obviously I have not discovered that in all these years )

You might need to add Edit Metadata to the toolbar or to the context menu,

Thanks,
I always used the hot key 'E'. no wonder I never saw that

My toolbar does have the icon, I just never used it (I also tend to use the context menus more than toolbars. time to change? Nah! Too old )

Ah yes, I see it now. It's a checkbox rather than the cmd button. Alt+W appears to be the shortcut--so that's nice.
