Dealing With Junk Images

A lot of e-books have junk images in them, but I'm not sure what the most efficient way to remove them is. For example, some publishers (who shall not be named but name themselves after the place of ancient oracles) include oodles of images of covers of other books in their series... and those images are almost always of public-domain art, so I wouldn't want them anyway. So I delete the pages in the epub that contains those images — but that doesn't remove the images. They're sitting there as file bloat.

If there's an option in Polish to remove uncalled images, it's not clear to me. That might also prove dangerous, because some books don't have a separate page for their own covers and have odd filenames for their covers.

So, from within the editor, is there a way to get a list of all calls of image files... especially those with cryptic names? That would at least enable me to manually remove them in more of a batch mode.

The check book tool in the editor will report unreference images. As will the Report tool. And conversion will auto remove them.

The two tools that Kovid mentioned will give you a list to work from if you want to delete the images one at a time. If you want to avoid the manual process and blast away every unused image file instantly, use the Modify EPUB plug-in. It has an option for that. The plug-in is not used within the Editor. I use Modify EPUB before I begin an edit session, then use it again after editing, precisely in the case where I want to avoid manually deleting lots of unlinked images.

I agree with Brett Merkey. I use the Modify ePub plugin to do lots of things, including removing unused images--before I edit a book, and after I'm finished editing the book and before I run Convert.
