Can't open books on Overdrive
Hi,
Recently i borrowed a few books from Overdrive onto my Clara HD. When i tried to open the book to read it, a sign popped up that said it couldnt open the book and asked me to sync the ereader. At first, I borrowed more books and tried to open those to see if it was the book problem but that same thing happened. I have synced and repaired the device but the book still cannot be opened. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Last edited by HolyAura; 02-28-2020 at 09:09 AM. |

I've borrowed one epub3 from the local library which has issues since it was an epub3 fixed layout with embedded audio and video (a children's book for one of my great nieces). When I looked at the fine print, it didn't list ereader as a supported device. It did work happily in the Kobo app on an iPad. |

The title of the book was called Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy. The book was an epub book but i borrowed it from Overdrive.
I don't think it was a book problem though, because I tried reborrowing a book that I had borrowed before and I also couldn't open it. |

Is this the first time you've tried to use Overdrive on your Clara? Where did you read the book you reborrowed?
Have you authorized the reader with your Adobe ID? |

No, I have been using Overdrive for a long time already. I borrow books directly on my ereader from Overdrive.
Yes, the reader is authorized with Adobe. |

Problems like this are usually fixed by removing the book and downloading again, or using the repair. Another way is to use the "Remove from My Books" when removing the book. Then go into your library in the Kobo store, choose the Archive and restore the book from there. On the next sync, there will be a complete download of the book including all the metadata. If this doesn't fix it, then it is likely that the database on the device is corrupt. Are you seeing any other problem? Such as the current location or status for a book reverting to an old status? This is usually a sign of a corrupt database. You can check it with any SQLite database management tool, or if you are a calibre user, my Kobo Utilities plugin. If it is a corrupt database, unless you have a recent backup, you will need to sign out of the Kobo account on the device and back in. Unfortunately, you will lose the reading status for any sideloaded books. And for purchased books, the status will be downloaded from Kobo. Unless there is a problem with the book, this will should things. If none of the above solves the problem, you will need to talk to Kobo about it. |

Thanks so much Davidfor,
I tried all of your suggestions and I guess it was a corrupt database after all. After I signed out and signed back into the reader, I could open the book. Problem solved. Thanks again! |

Seems to be a common cause of problems with the Kobos. I had something that I had to fix with a sign-out a couple months ago.

I've never had a corrupt database. But some things I do just in case is I use the Kobo Utilities plugin to make a copy of the database when I connect to Calibre. I also use the Reading List plugin to automatically keep track of what eBooks are on my H2O. So if I was to have a corrupt database, I'd be able to restore things well enough to get back up and running.
