Stories & Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875)
Selections were taken from multiple translations: Spoiler:
With Alphabetical Index of Titles, including alternate titles. Endnotes provided by the Author and the translators. --------------- When someone says “fairy tales,” chances are your first thought will be “Grimms’ and Hans Christian Andersen.” Here then, an extensive collection of 158 .[*] of Andersen’s fairy tales, stories, and essays. Not all are fantastical, but elements of wonder abound. Persons familiar only with the “Disney-fied” versions of some of the fairytales have surprises in store, and perhaps even longstanding Andersen fans will meet new friends here [* 10 titles were omitted; no English translations in the Public Domain could be found.] Fairy Tale Fans may be also interested in the collection of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, posted some time ago: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=283862 --------------- Danish author Hans Christian Andersen (2 April 1805 – 4 August 1875) was a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, but he is best remembered for his fairy tales. His stories, expressing themes that transcend age and nationality, have become culturally embedded in the West’s collective consciousness. They are readily accessible to children, but present lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Andersen’s stories have been translated into more than 125 languages, and have inspired ballets, plays, and animated and live-action films. His most famous fairy tales include The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, The Princess on the Pea, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Little Match Girl, Thumbelina, The Nightingale, The Red Shoes, and The Snow Queen. (—adapted from Wikipedia.) --------------- These stories were first published 1835 ~ 1873. The various translations were first published between 1870 and 1930.
