Remove "cloud" books from "All" tab offline
Hello,
so last week I bought a used kindle paperwhite (PW3) off of Facebook marketplace. I registered it to my account and set everything up (accidentally updated to 5.12.2 in the process). The first thing I noticed was that it came with special offers. A quick hop onto amazon's support chat and Amazon removed the special offers for me. Two days ago I serial jailbroke the device and put it into airplane mode - I exclusively sideload books using calibre anyways. Now, annoyingly the "All" tab of the homescreen shows all books in my amazon library, even the ones not on the device. These include books I don't need anymore or that are not intended for the kindle (non-fiction books for example). How can I clean the "All" tab of the kindle from these unwanted books while keeping the device fully offline? I thought about resetting the device to stock but then I would need to connect back online to register and use the device, wouldn't I? That would bring the content straight back. What about the special offers? Would they return once I reset the device to stock (since the unit came with special offers from the factory) or are they disabled for good? Since the unit is jailbroken, is there something I can do that way in order to remove "unwanted" books from the library list? |

Well that is what "all" means by definition. Probably the easiest way to get it the way you want is to change the way your books are organized on Calibre, then start over with the device i.e. side load your books again from the new library.
In your place I'd just create a new Calibre library and either move the Calibre books you want on the Kindle to that library - or (much better IMO) copy i.e. make duplicates of your existing books that you want on the device in the new library. That way your existing collections remain organized the same way and this new library are both duplicates and an accurate snapshot of what you want to display on your device. For special offers it all depends on what the Amazon did when you called them. They may have just unregistered your device - ads won't show up until you register. Or (less likely) they may have removed the ads because of the change of ownership. Less likely because they usually charge $20 to effect that permanent removal of ads. And depending on how you did the jailbreak might impact this too. You said that you always side load books anyway so you wouldn't gain much other than ads by registering. So not registering will keep ads at an arms length in either scenario. Last edited by Junket; 12-05-2019 at 09:44 AM. |

Thank you for your feedback.

I jailbroke the device a few days *after* the removal of special offers. Quote:
As for the jailbreak, I had to use the serial method to jailbreak my device because the device updated to 5.12.2 already - that means I had to open the device and connect to the serial TX/RX points to get shell access and run a shell script. Am I right In assuming that a factory reset will undo my jailbreak entirely? I.e. I have to open the device again and run the shellscript again? |

Nice. That does sound like Amazon permanently disabled ads for you without charging you the customary $20 fee. If so, that should survive a hard reset.
But yes, if you did a hard reset it would require you to register again. But if Amazon did permanently remove the special offers that should remain the case even after you re-register. I'm not sure why you want to factory reset? I can't imagine anything short of bad file corruption (very unlikely) compelling me to do so. Keep in mind that a factory reset will mess up your jailbreak. And should you let it auto update to a newer firmware version as well you *may* not be able to jailbreak it again. It depends on a number of things that you should look into more before you actually do a factory reset. Probably if the factory reset itself will mess your jail break up but I believe that you could still reinstall the jailbreak provided that an firmware update hasn't also occurred thanks to the hotfix design And even so you could probably do the serial jailbreak again since you have a PW3. That wouldn't be possible with say a PW4. In any event, if you a factory reset and wish to skip registration you can either choose to defer registration during the wifi setup step. Or simply force a restart by holding the power button for about ten seconds until your Kindle restarts - and it should land you on the home screen while still unregistered. But if a factory reset will also remove my jailbreak, I'll probably just live with this. |

I edited my earlier reply for clarity. A factory reset would mess up your jailbreak. But the hotfix file that you installed should allow you to reinstall the jailbreak without using the serial adapter as long as you don't also allow a firmware update in the process.
As to removing your current books from the Kindle, a factory reset isn't the only way to do that. You could also use the remove item menu or the Amazon account manage your device page (if you let your Kindle talk to Amazon) or by resyncing with an Calibre if Calibre is configured to remove as well as add sync items for instance. Since it sounds like you side load your books and keep your PW in airplane mode the simplest method is probably to connect your Kindle to your PC and use a file manager to delete the books in the folders there. It might take several restarts before the links to the deleted books on the Kindle home screen update though. Last edited by Junket; 12-05-2019 at 11:19 AM. Reason: Clarity is a demanding mistress |

*Items include books, Audible files, comics, samples, periodicals, docs, and collections. The ALL option is there so you can see your entire library stored on the cloud so you can find an item you want to download to your Kindle. @Localhorst86 The point of the ALL tab is to show all your books both on device and on cloud. If you just want to see books on the device (shows both downloads and USB sideloads), switch to the DOWNLOADED tab. You don't need to register the device when you get it (or after factory reset). I just skip wi-fi setup altogether: on wi-fi selection, choose Other then on the following page, chooase Skip Last edited by ilovejedd; 12-05-2019 at 12:58 PM. |

This is a reply to post #1.
The easiest thing you can do is not use the "All" filter. You seem to want to redefine what it means. Alternatively, if you are willing to run some SQL commands, you might be able to do what you want to clean up the cc.db database. It would be best to ask for help with that in the Kindle Developers Corner forum (but be prepared to overcome skepticism about what you are trying to do). If you keep a backup of cc.db you can reverse any mistakes. You do have USBnetworking installed and working, right? |

Couldn't you set up a new Amazon account (i.e., used only for purposes of not registering to the account that contains all the books in your account that you DON'T want to see on in the ALL tab) and register your Kindle to it? Last edited by 93terp; 12-05-2019 at 12:59 PM. |

Ok, thanks for all the input guys. I think I'm just gonna factory reset the device, re-jailbreak it using the hotfix file and skip linking it to my account.
