Prevent original files from deleting from book folder

After converted a book to new format, an original file will be saved in the same book folder. But when I rename the Authors name or book title in Calibre, the original file will be deleted.

Is there a setting to prevent the file from getting deleted? Thank you.

Are you sure you are using the (library) GUI interface to do the rename?
AFAIK that is NOT the expected results.
A rename should just relocate the folder (this happens under the skirts).
The folder may get a new {id} when this happens.
What OS?
What version of Calibre

I just changed an Author Name via Tag Browser right click menu, and a book Title via F2 in Book List. The .original_epub files were preserved in both instances - along with an M3U playlist and an AVI video.

How did you change Author name and Book Title? The way I did them is not the only way.

This was on 64bit Win10 Pro 1903, and 64 bit calibre 4.4.

Beside the original files after convert format, I also add to the book folder mp3, mp4 or image files that is related to the books.

I change the Title or Author(s) when cover grid is turn off which looks like file explorer. I single click at the title or author cell to change Title or Author(s) name.

After the change all files are gone except cover.jpg, metadata.opf and the pdf file

Before Title or Author Change

After Title Change

After Author Change

Single Click the cell to change Title or Author(s)

If you are adding these files to the directory for the book, then that is expected behaviour. Calibre doesn't know about them, so it doesn't know what to do with them. If you add them to the book via calibre, they will be kept with the book when the author or title is changed.

IMO the easiest ways to add a file (or files) to a Book are
  1. mouseketeers - drag drop the file(s) into the target book's Book Details Panel
  2. keyboard warriors - select the file(s) in the file browser, copy to clipboard with Ctrl+C, select the target book(s) in the booklist, and paste with Shift+Alt+V. This method allows multiple files to be added to multiple books.
