Is it possible to search for an author without typing authors:"=Ian Douglas" just the name of the author for example?

Yes! It just takes longer as the search look everywhere (text containing type fields)
There is a SETTING that Limits where 'non-prefixed' (no field name) sears look.

Preferences: Searching: (tick the 'Limit..." box and list the names.
If, you have a custom 'Authors' type column, remember to include it.
If you put the authors-title list for anthologies some place, remember that one too

Sure it is, just type Ian Douglas

If the value appears anywhere other than Authors, e.g. in downloaded marketing blurb that book with show up too. You can limit search scope in Preferences->Searching - e.g. some folds exclude Comments.

And don't forget the Advanced Search feature, that's the gear icon at left end of search bar, or easier yet - Ctrl+Shift+F.

If you just want to find an author, why not use the search bar at the bottom of the tag browser?
