AZW3 Enhanced Typesetting
Win10, 64bit
When I convert an epub to AZW3, Kindle Previewer v3.34 tells me that "Enhanced Typesettiing preview is not supported since the Mobi file has been created by an older version of Kindlegen or by 3rd party tools (I assume they mean Calibre) It seems OK on my Paperwhite Q1: Are there conversion options that I can change to get these "enhanced typesetting" options? Q2: What is enhanced typesetting? I did try the KFX plugin but I got an "Unsupported file type error when I tried to open it with Previewer Last edited by phossler; 10-30-2019 at 11:01 AM. |

Enhanced Typesetting requires the KFX format. You can read more about the capabilities of Enhanced Typesetting here.
As you discovered the KFX Output plugin can be used to produce KFX format for sideloading to a Kindle. The Kindle Previewer can also display KFX format, but it requires the file to have an extension of .azw8 for this to work. |

Ah -- thanks
So, the KFX PI does make .KFX files that I can side load. Do I need to rename them to .azw8 to read on the Kindle, or just to read with the PC Kindle Previewer? |

If you want hyphenation, you can use the Hyphenate This! plugin with KF8 (AZW3) eBooks. What you won't get kerning or ligatures. Also, you might not be able to use negative margins (I've never tried with KFX).

Uploading* an epub2 from Calibre to Amazon results in Amazon claiming Advanced Typesetting!
However Download to PC and transfer via USB is prefered by people I know and myself as then it's AZW/KF8. The direct download via 3G or WiFi seems to result in the KFX. It has DRM even when publisher has set DRM free. It's an evil DRM & structure compared to azw/mobi designed to lock you to Amazon Cloud instead of your own backups and being able to replace broken Kindle. Amazon can and does delete/block accounts. The visual difference in most books seem slight. It seems like marking spin to justify an even more evil proprietary format. (* I mean upload to KDP to publish, not Send to Kindle, which seems like a Googlesque scheme for Amazon to get copies, please use USB/Sideload as giving Amazon a copy may violate copyright. They are not simply forwarding to your Kindle.) Last edited by Quoth; 10-30-2019 at 06:11 PM. Reason: Clarify |

@JSWolf -- I do use Hyphenate This! already, but does not seem to work on KFX (or AZW8) files. Nothing I can find in it's Settings
@FrustratedReader - I just side load the AZW3 from my PC to the PaperWhite. Much easier that way @jhowell - renaming KFX to AZW8 works for the PC Kindle Previewer. Last edited by phossler; 10-30-2019 at 10:33 PM. Reason: Deleted comment about AZW8 sideloads |

There's no need to hyphenate KFX. KFX supports hyphenation. But if you really wanted to do so, you might be able to do so by hyphenating the KF8 or ePub and then using the KFX plugin to try to convert to KFX.
