sort the series in the reading order

Hello ,
I use caliber on windows 10 and I would like to be able to sort the series in the reading order
Currently "sample serie 1"
"example of serie 10"
"example of serie 11"
"example of serie 12"

instead of "example of serie1"
"example of serie2"
"example of serie 3"
etc ..
Thanks for telling me the procedure, ascending and descending order does not work

The lack of a space will throw off the FILENAME sort (AKA ASCII sort).
That is the reason single digits are padded with a leading character (0 is common as it sorts before 1 and is visible, where an extra space is hard to see)

Ad 0 before single number and keep the naming coherent.

Book etc 01
Book etc 02
...

That way, should work just fine without messing with formatting

I've done that for years with music folders to play correctly in most mp3 players

The cleanest way is to use the title/series/series index fields as they're supposed to be used, rather than stuffing the series/number into the title field. Then you can sort on the series, which knows that the series index is a number and properly sorts 1 < 9 < 10.

Using the metadata correctly rather than overloading the title will also allow you to easily search by series (e.g. right-click, Similar Books->Books in this series) and things like that.
  1. Make the title just the title of the book (don't include the series name/number here). This should be just “The Return of the King”, not "The Return of the King — The Lord of the Rings 3".
  2. Use the series field for the name of the series (don't include the number here). For instance, “The Lord of the Rings”. Place the index in the series into the series index (not into the series name): for instance, “3”.

Screenshots attached of a long series sorted in order and of what the metadata looks like in the edit window.

I tried that once. Didn't like it as i couldn't see more than the title in the book list on the kobo.

I agree it's the most correct way to sort. Bit i still prefer to see the info i want to see on the kobos library. I tend to use the following name format as rule:

Author - Series (if applicable) - book number or year - book name

Interesting. On my Kobo, I send the book, disconnect and let the Kobo import the book, reconnect and update metadata (I have this set to automatic), disconnect and the series data from calibre is visible on my Kobo. I didn't bother with a sort by series view.

That's a fairly major thing to miss from your first post. When I read it, I assumed you were doing it in calibre and trying to sort there. I couldn't actually work out how you were doing it or where you doing this.

Firstly, in calibre you are much better to keep the various metadata attributes as they are intended. You can do some fiddling when sending the book to the device.

On the device, if you are using the native Kobo application, then it supports series information. It will display, sort and search the series info. Unfortunately, the way the device works means you need to send your books to the device, disconnect to let it import the books and then reconnect to get the update.

If you are using KOreader or something else, or still want the details in the title, then you can use a metadata plugboard to set the metadata to what you want during the send. There are some threads with examples that you can use for this.

Sort the series in the reading order OK

Thank you everyone

OK thanks @sjfan
this procedure is correct
I use a munero in the serial field that was identical to the serial index
So I delete this number in the field serie and it's OK

I may have missed the update metadata part. Either way, i have up on that at the time. Maybe, I'll try it again. Now i know better, thanks!

I see I've been missing a lot. Been using kobo for 6 years or so and wasn't using all it's "potential". It was mainly, get file, paste file in folder and read.

Only just a few weeks ago i known about the pluggin in calibre to convert the files to kepub (that improved massively the reading experience).

Still learning

Thanks!

Incidentally, when naming series in Calibre, you may find it a good idea to strip out leading definite/indefinite articles. Otherwise, with 1000 series you may find you have 900 starting with the word 'The', 50 starting with the word 'A' and another 50 starting with neither... This makes searching for a specific series rather tedious.

Calibre Series sorts properly with articles, but I do agree there are cases where I modify what is printed on the cover..

A Blue Moon Mystery
Stupid Lives Here Series
The Haunted House MysteriesMystery <It is a SINGLE BOOK >

FWIW I use this procedure on my Kobo and it sorts correctly there. So hopefully you just missed the metadata update and that fixes things for you!
