AZW3 to DOCX - Non-breaking Spaces

I'm working with an author; we now have a 90% good azw3 file. All the CSS is by hand for this book (lots of poetry & quotations), and it looks really good. After an initial import of mostly plain text, we've coded it all right in the Editor.

Now to get a proof copy to read on paper, we converted to docx. It's mostly pretty good, but it is just laced with non-breaking spaces. They mess up the way lines break no end. There sure aren't any in the azw3.

Does anyone know what might cause this, or how to avoid it?

Many thanks!

Do you have white-space in your ebook CSS?

If you mean empty paragraphs or breaks, no. All the spacing is in CSS margins. The nbsp's are appearing at random, as far as I can tell, in the middle of plain old paragraphs, where there are plain spaces in the original.

Found it!

Thanks, Kovid, your question about whitespace caused me to look at it in a different way. Comparing a fresh conversion to what the author sent me (we're some 6,000km apart), it turns out she did some very minor editing in Word, and that is where the nbsp's appeared. Word is so helpful!
