Question How can speed up the process from off to "reading a book"

When I power on my Forma, it takes a long time before i am able to read a book. I see those 5 squares on a horizontal axis and I wait and wait.

Is there anything I can do to speed up the process from power-off to reading?

I wonder why you power it off rather than let it sleep? This is the main reason I never turn mine off, the speed of coming back to life. Since my forma is used at least once a day, I don't see a need to power off.

Not sure... I guess I want to save on battery power.

There's no need to turn it off if you use it regularly, in my opinion. Remember, e ink is a static image so uses little power so long as the image isn't moving (you're not turning a page when it sleeps). This is one of the strengths of e ink. Get a sleep cover and forget about powering it off.

Another reason to not power off is to save wear and tear on the ON/OFF switch.

peter, is the button that fragile? I've had my Forma for just two weeks and haven't heard any complaints.

Not that I've heard of. But, if you don't use a cover, you will have the same use of the button waking it as turning it on.

The battery usage of these devices sleeping is so low, that unless you aren't going to use the device for a week or more, turning it off is not that helpful. If you are reading every day, the reading will be what is running the battery down.

It's just too bad that the options for ”Automatically power off after” are ”5, 10,15,30, 45m 60 minutes, never” and doesn't include a longer period like 2 days, 3 days, 4 days, 1 week,

I used my first Sony Reader for approximately five years. It didn't have a sleep cover and the power button never wore out from use. I hope Kobos would hold up as well.

Sony readers did automatically shut down (not just sleep, but shut down) if not used for a few days, though it was very rare for me to go that long without reading. I haven't yet gone more than a day without using my Kobo. I assumed it would shut itself off at some point - maybe I was wrong in this?

I agree. But leave it on "never" for awhile and keep an eye on the battery level. The 1 week setting would be good for when I get hit by a truck so that my descendants don't find my ereader has a dead battery.

The "Never" means no automatic shutdown. It will stay in sleep mode until it runs out of battery.

Is there a hack/twaek/patch/whatever that will give us longer periods (e.g. one week)?

Not as far as I know. The last time I looked, the counter used 8 bits in minutes so 1 to 255 minutes (0 says never, BTW).

Nice, 255 minutes is 4 hours and 15 minutes. How can I make my Forma auto-poweroff in 4h15m?

Yeah, that last 15 minutes is a real battery killer.
