Oasis 3 auto brightness
I purchased a new Oasis 3 but am perplexed by the auto brightness feature
Unlike an AMOLED cell phone, I would EXPECT this type of auto brightness behavior on Kindle - Brightness turns low in bright light - Brightness adjusts based on user level to mids in dim room Instead the ACTUAL behavior is - Brightness on auto is too low in dim room - Brightness turns all the way to max in bright daylight when I would prefer no backlight This is the inverse of what I would expect. Is there any way to change the behavior and if not, a way to cause lights to only turn on say between 8:00pm and 8:00am (as is possible for warmth settings)? Thanks |

Tried "training" it. However their algorithm only works in one direction.
If I set brightness to 1 in a very bright room, that's the max level. If I go in a dim room room and change brightness to 12 as an example, brightness will go up to 18 in a bright room. Training is only in 1 direction. They have used the same algorithm as an AMOLED phone - super bright in the sun, dim in the darkness. Need the exact opposite for a Kindle. Surprising basic flaw. When it's bright and sunny, there is no need for a backlight on the Kindle. However since this is all software - if more people complain, they may actually fix it. Would encourage others who feel the same to send messages to Kindle's twitter page at https://twitter.com/AmazonKindle |

You don't want a frontlit device super bright in a dark room. It would be blinding. The darker the room, the lower the light can be set. When I read in a dark bedroom, I start about 12 on my Kindles, and turn it down more as my eyes adjust. I usually end up at about 7.
I agree about the sunshine, the light isn't necessary at all then. But that said, I never use auto-brightness on any of my devices. I'm not fussing about anything on social media. When I have real issues with Amazon, I Contact Amazon CS directly. |

That makes the feature unusable. Would ask other who agree with me to contact Amazon Twitter - however completely understand if the feature works for you as is. Last edited by Like_to_read; 08-29-2019 at 08:52 PM. |

All features are options. No one needs to tinker with any option/ feature on a Kindle and can use default settings. However that would defeat the purpose of buying a Kindle
Again, the post is for other people who want it to work the way I do. Completely understand if you are happy with it the way it is. That's the great thing about Kindle - everyone can adjust it to their preferences. Last edited by Like_to_read; 08-29-2019 at 08:57 PM. |

I adjust the brightness manually. I find the auto brightness really annoying. I have a reading lamp next to my comfy chair. Every time I turn in a different direction the brightness on the Oasis will change.

I'm 78 and facing cataract surgery and regardless of the ambient light my Paperwhite is set to maximum. I had an Oasis 3, turned off the auto brightness, and then returned the Oasis 3.

I must be the oddball exception. My Oasis 3 (and other Kindles, for that matter) has been "trained" to my preferences and honors them. The only exception would be outdoors in full sun, which I would expect, but is certainly not annoying.

My vision needs aren't static, what works today may not work tomorrow. Some days I need larger fonts, some days I need wider line spacing, etc. The same goes for the lighting I may need.

Me too. Adding my two cents here: I "trained" my O2 to be at brightness level 5 in a completely dark room, which is the way I like to read. So when I turn of my lamp, the brightness goes down slowly but never goes lower than 5. Which, for me, is a pretty good behavior. In bright sunlight I can't care less if the brightness is maxed out. I don't really believe it is going to reduce battery charge duration, and in my usage it is pretty rare that I would read in direct sunlight.
But I agree that the algorithm should have an upper cap where it would turn off the light. Maybe people that read a lot in the sun get reduced battery charge duration. |

I am curious what brightness settings do you and other use to read at night.
In a room with indirect lighting (a few 60 w equivalent lamps), I use warmth of 23-24 and brightness of 11-13 |
