Hello, All:
Recently, my Clara HD has begun forgetting where my reading place is! I read on another forum that the problem was solved in firmware (4.15.12930 (b231bfea36, 2019-05-27)) but, at least in my case, it has not! I would be most appreciative to 'hear' any suggestions!! Sparky |

As you have firmware version 4.15.12930, there are two possibilities I can think of. Which it is probably depends on whether it is all book, or just some. And the format you read.
With firmware 4.15.12930, there is a bug when reading epubs that don't have every internal file in the ToC, or have extra ToC entries. With this, if you close the book in the wrong place, it will reopen at the start of the book. There will also be some strangeness with opening the ToC and what is selected. This is the likely reason if you are not seeing the problem for all books. Updating the ToC in the book is the only workaround. Hopefully Kobo will fix it in the next release. The other likely reason is a corrupted internal database. This will usually mean that the reading position isn't updated for books you were reading when the corruption happened. And opening a new book will probably not remember the status if you power off the device. You can test the database with an SQLite database manager, or my Kobo Utilities plugin if you are a calibre user. Unless you have a recent backup of the database, you will need to sign out of the Kobo account on the device recreate the database. |

probably because some library books have badly made TOC. I have seen instances [ after peeking at code to see what the problem was] where library books did not honour the 1 html file = 1 chapter = 1 toc entry formula
sometimes the only damage is that the page count gets confused, but I guess a more badly made one will have your lose your place bug if its happening with all your library books though, that may be a completely different issue. |

I read library books all the time on my Clara. Mostly the books are synced via wifi but there have been a couple that weren't available that way which I had to download to my computer and then send to the Clara via ADE. So far I have not noticed a problem with the reader remembering my page. fingers crossed ....

Are they library books downloaded through the device, or sideloaded via ADE? With the latter, it is probably the first reason I gave above. For books downloaded to the device, I haven't seen anything that would suggest a common problem with these except where the database has become corrupted.

should be easy to inspect then, say in calibre editor
an ideal book has one file per chapter and one toc entry for each chapter. a prologue, or an epilogue is counted like another chapter. so a book that goes prologue, 10 chapters, epilogue should have 12 toc entries and 12 html files in the epub. if you have a book that passes that test but still does not remember last page read, then its a different issue but if you have 2 or more TOC entries pointing to the same file, or if you have one or more files that don't have their own toc entry, that's probably the cause. if you can send the same book to a different device, and test if last page is remembered or forgotten, that will also be useful feedback |

As well as what @stumped suggested, you can do some testing on the device.
When you reopen the book, it is probably opening to the first page of the book. Navigate back to your place. Then open the ToC. If it is the problem I am thinking of, the first chapter in the book will be selected. |

A quick update: The book I was reading at the time I described was a book I downloaded from Amazon, in .mobi, and converted to .epub in Calibre.
I finally decided that the problem was due to the same kind of problem that Windows, for example, has when it hasn't been refreshed for awhile - peculiar things can begin to creep in. So, I decided to bite the bullet, I created an additional column in Calibre so I knew exactly which books were there, and did an automatic factory refresh. I then used that new column to select the books to send back, with Calibre, and all seems to be working properly again. So, now I've made the same note to myself that if Kobo starts to 'misbehave' - do a factory refresh and start over. Thanks to all for the information - the details about how the books are organized inside were fascinating!! Thanks for that! Sparky |

Hello, all:
For Davidfor: I am confused how your suggestion: "Signing out of the Kobo account on the device and back in would have fixed it without needing to resend the books to the device" would have any effect. On the Kobo, I don't have Wi-Fi turned on except when I am attempting to update the operating system. I connect it to Calibre by a cable. Plus, the latest book to give me the problem I downloaded from Amazon (Free) into a folder on this tablet, I then added the book to Calibre (which does know the S/N of my Kindle), converted it to epub from mobi in Calibre, and then downloaded it to my Kobo Clara HD. When I was reading the book and had the problem, however, the Kobo was stand-alone! Sparky |

I believe that a signout / sign-in sequence drops the database but does not delete any of the epubs or kepubs from the device.
When you redo the setup the filesystem will be scanned and the contents re-added to the database. You will loose the reading locations and any shelving info. Sent from my moto g(7) power using Tapatalk |
