Moving to KO3 - Questions

Long time Kobo user thinking on getting a new KO3 have a few questions.

I usually get all my books from my local library in EPUB format, use Calibre to sideload the books to the Kobo and during this process the format changes to KEPUB, this gives me ability to track my activity which among other data i get reading time, pages per minutes, average session, etc.

Questions

1. Does the KO3 has this tracking/activity option?
2. While converting EPUB to AZW3 do you loose anything in the process?
3. Can you increase/decrease the brightness by swiping up/down on the left side of the screen?
4. When you put the KO3 to sleep, do you get to see the cover of the current book?

Cheers

1. No, Kindles have no reading stats
2. Not really, unless the layout is very complex
3. Not to my knowledge
4. No, you cannot change the default screensavers

The only and unique advantage of a Kindle over any other device for non-Amazon purchased books is...

... It is the only and unique application that is able to synchronize the reading position across devices and across platforms without issues. Even with low quality WiFi.

Any other application that will offer synchronization, sooner than later, will fail to sync.

Why I can say this in so categorical manner? Because I've used all and all have failed to me... except Kindle in all of their devices (say, Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Kindle devices). Well, Windows and macOS only for purchased ones.

Ask for an application/device with synchronization and I will tell you with how many frequency it fails to synchronize.

I don't use AZW3 because of it has no hyphenation. You could use the "hyphenate this" plugin (to create soft hypens) but if there are notes You won't get dashes on pop up notes. I think it is better KFX, You will obtain hyphenation, kerning and ligatures (ligatures are not present with Kepub, the only drawback of Kobo in my opinion). The number of books that can be converted in KFX is now very large.

For the rest of Your questions I agree with @Sirtel

edit: not all languages are supported in KFX, and I have herd that in Russian (may be? I am not sure) AZW3 supports hyphenation.

The reason I use AZW3 exclusively is that it's the only format that supports the FONT_RAMP hack, i.e. custom font sizes. KFX doesn't.

Yes I Have the FONT_RAMP hack on my PW3 but, of course, with KFX it doesn't work. It's only a question of individual preference, we can't have all, sometimes I would need an intermediate size but I still prefer hyphenation, kerning and ligatures when reading.

And the KFX output plugin of calibre doesn't work with Linux, but I have a dual boot with Windows 10, so I use calibre in Linux for Kobo and calibre in Windows for Kindle. Life is complicated

We are like ex-homeless cats. Who eat all kinds of s...t on the streets, but when they're rescued and adopted, most of them instantly become terribly picky and fastidious.

Do you know why (cats an us as ebook readers)? Because we have the possibility of improve and the worst part: the eternal in-satisfaction of life.

About getting epubs from your local library, I strongly suspect you'd run into Fair Use Circumvention Kit (AKA DRM) issues.

All my purchased ebooks cross that path and get the freedom they deserve. Never another Fictionwise issue.

The thing is that we seem to be talking about ebooks lent from the library. Maybe not though, my library used to offer some ebooks for download DRM free, mostly public domain stuff I think. But that was a while ago

rubbish

epub in moon reader, syncing last page read etc. via dropbox. ALWAYS WORKS, NEVER FAILS - unless you lose your internet connection

i have been using it for years

if you don't have/like dropbox, there's an option to sync via google drive

also |: libby , for library loans, syncs very reliably once you set it up correctly
