[Kobo Fire] My device is not detected by calibre

If all the above steps fail, go to Preferences->Miscellaneous and click debug device detection with your device attached and post the output in this forum - here it is:

Pete again. i solved it: the fire had a menu for USB, that allowed "charging " or "transfer files." Obvious when you find it.

somone with the power should maybe make a sticky of that. Dunno how torequest that.

I have posted about needing to look for the USB menu into various threads. It seems to be still not widely known, as the older Fire tablets did not require that step. folks are buying the latest device, then saying my old one works but not my new one...
