Nesbit, Edith: Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare (illus). v1. 30 Jun 2019

BEAUTIFUL STORIES FROM SHAKESPEARE
Retold by Edith Nesbit (1858–1924).
Illustrated by Frances Brundage (1854–1937) and Max Bihn (1869–1923).
With “A Brief Life of Shakespeare” by noted philologist F. J. Furnivall (1825–1910).

The Children’s Shakespeare, comprised of twelve stories, was first published in 1897; Twenty Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare was published in 1907. The text and illustrations of this book are in the public domain in countries where the copyright term is “Life+80” or less, and in the USA.

Esteemed children’s author Edith Nesbit recounts twenty of the greatest of Shakespeare’s plays in concise and charming prose simple enough for children to understand and enjoy. This book provides a wonderful introduction to the characters and stories of these often complicated plays, useful even for adult readers.

Lavishly illustrated, with most of the characters portrayed as children or young adolescents. Brundage’s expressive full-page color illustrations are delightful. The section “Quotations from Shakespeare” presents a tasty selection of the rich and satisfying language and wisdom of the Bard of Avon.

Recommended for ages eight and up, and for any beginning student of Shakespeare.

-----------------
Edith Nesbit Bland, English author and poet, published approximately 40 books for children under the name of E. Nesbit. Her innovative body of work combined realistic, contemporary children in real-world settings with magical objects and adventures; and influenced many subsequent fantasy writers. She also published over two dozen novels and story collections for adults. Some of her best known books are Five Children and It (from the Psammead series), The Story of the Treasure Seekers (from the Bastables series), and The Railway Children.

-----------------
The book includes interactive cross-linked in-line Table of Contents, embedded font. Editing notes are available inside the book.

-----------------
If you or young people you know want to learn some basic Shakespeare, these brief prose stories are a fantastic starting point. Highly recommended.

Thank you for the compliment!
I am working on another Nesbit book now, Royal Children in English History. Not quite as good as this one, but Nesbit is always pretty good.
