Battery drain when using a magnetic clip cover
Well, the subject says it all.
I had the feeling that the magnetic clip cover was causing a battery drain in my Kobo Clara HD, yesterday I had a quick test and can confirm it: * two hours in stabdby with the magnetic clip cover: battery down from 100% to 92% * twelve hours in standby without cover: battery down to 91% So, at the moment I am using it without cover. I was wondering, has anybody else experimented this? May it be due to a bad cover build, or should I give up the use of a cover? |

Did the standby without cover test also start at 100%? Because 100% to 91% in standby in 12 hours seems much more than I would expect, but 92 to 91 would be plausible.

Interesting. That might actually explain the idea I have that my Forma has started to use more battery of late. I'm using an aftermarket sleepcover since a few weeks... I'll do a test over the weekend.

I rarely have the Clara HD sleep for a long time without the cover closed. There hasn't been an issue with the battery draining. And I just checked it. I last used it about 24 hours ago. At that time, I connected it to the PC to while transferring a book to it. Then I disconnected it and closed the cover. I just opened the cover and it is at 99%. It was probably fully charged when I disconnected it.
I do get an occasional unexpected battery discharge from my devices. But, it almost always happens in my work backpack. I have come to the conclusion that the magnets in the covers of the Aura ONE, Clara HD and iPad can interfere with the other devices and prevent them from sleeping. I think the iPad cover is the culprit as it has more than one magnet and they seem to be stronger. And that it depends on exactly how they all sit together in the bag. |

No no, they were two consecutive tests: in two hours with the cover it discharged by 8%, in twelve hours without cover it discharged by 1%.

Does your cover has a brand? Mine is a nameless one bought on Amazon, maybe with a better one the problem wouldn't show, but I am somewhat reluctant to buy another one without at least some hint that it wouldn't show the problem...

Are you sure the device is actually sleeping? Can you see that the light has gone off? Or briefly see the sleep screen when you open the cover? |

With my H2O and my Glo HD, shutting the covers tends not to put them to sleep. I have to be careful and slide the front of the cover to the left to turn off the light. And one's an official Kobo cover and the other isn't.

I will buy and try it.
I have seen that sometimes the device does not sleep when I close the cover, in that case I can see the light throught the borders of the cover. This was not the case with the test I made yesterday: the light went off, and when I opened it again I could briefly see the sleep screen, as usual. Also, 8% in two hours is too much even for a non sleeping device, it almost seems as if the clip drains the battery!... |

Another thread on this subject:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=310518 I use this case: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Open/closed on/off I see No Difference in battery. BUT Leave the WiFi On it Dies Quick. I suggest you turn Off the Wifi when not needed. My light is at 50 - 60% I keep the Color lights OFF. Last edited by Barbara1955; 06-21-2019 at 11:13 AM. |

even with wifi on, unless you set it to forcibly stay on forever (not possible in the menu I think, but can be done in the config file), it turns off the wifi after a minute anyway. so even with wifi on, technically it's off most of the time.
always-on wifi does eat up the battery rather quickly but unless you mod it, you don't have that most likely your device is waking up when you don't expect. the magnet sensor should have an half-mode. turn off when cover is closed. require button push to wake up. then the random wakeup problem (every time the cover wiggles a bit) would be gone |

That's right, Clara keeps the battery SUBSTANTIALLY smaller than the Glo HD
Without SleepCover, the battery is consumed less. There is a suspicion that programmers have confused again. Last edited by Semwize; 06-22-2019 at 07:15 PM. |
