Reader broke down, should I send him in?
well,
My reader seems coocked, I tried to re-load the img file, but to no avail. The led just stays on for 10 sec and nothing more. Resetting etc does not work either.... My question? Should I try to send it in (warranty was expired anyway) or just buy a new one? In other words: would it not cost more to repair it, if it's repairable at all? (reader does not show up on my pc, SD card works, but he just does not want to boot, screen is not broken either.) greetz LN |

The screen is the expensive & more often broken bit. Maybe the problem is the INTERNAL SD card. Or have you opened it and that's the card you mean, not the external one?

I opened it up, and yes it's the internal card.
And it makes me suggest Kobo won't be very happy in reporting it (well, I would not, given the chance on malfunctions by ii experienced persons) I do have some experience in this field, so I knew the risk in opening it up. A better way of asking would be : would it be not more expensive to repair it, if they want to repair it at all... And would there be a market to sell off the screen? Just to help out some more fellow LN |

There are so few serviceable parts in these devices, that attempting to get them repaired is probably pointless. The card can be reimaged or replaced. The screen can be replaced but is relatively expensive. About the only other thing you can do is inspect the board for any obvious damage.
I would suggest trying another card and making sure all the cables are connected properly. Plus inspect the screen for damage. If the backplane is cracked, the screen won't work. Usually it is obvious, but sometimes it can only be seen from the back. As to selling for parts, the screen is delicate and easily broken. Unfortunately, this means that there are lots of posts about them. If your screen is good, someone will want it. |

Just curious as to how you diagnosed it as being the internal SD card?

Thanks @davidfor, I'll look into it.
@PeterT , it was mostly reduction of the other possibilities. Thing is, the reader does not boot up. The led should flash when it boots, and it does not. It stays on for a couple of seconds and than turns off. First I thought it would be the screen, but then the reader would boot and just would not show anything. And the screen does not have any (visible) damages. Second I guessed it could be the battery, but even with external power it does not boot up. And the led keeps turning up when USB is connected. Tirth, the reader does not show up on my PC when connected. It does flash the device manager as it seems to detect something, but it just does not detect anything new (what is strange, but well … ) So the next step was the internal SD card. I put a clean image on it, no help, and did a surface check, no errors. If the card would be corrupted, some errors should turn up on the scan. I did not have a new card laying around, will pick one up at the store, but I don't put my hopes on it. and that was my trouble shooting. I don't see visual defects on the board, all flat cables are disconnected and re-connected and the reader stays bricked. Could be I missed something, I'm always open to suggestions. LN |

Thanks. I'd wanted to ensure that you hadn't made that assumption after placing the SD card in a SD card reader attached to your PC and assuming that because it wouldn't appear as a drive that the card was dead.
