Quick peek video for the Nook Glowlight Plus

I'm not a pro reviewer, so here's just a quick peek. Not intended to be a full review.

Thanks, nice job.

That book looks interesting and it's only $2 on Amazon so I bought it.

Since you like books about war you might like A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II by Gerhard L. Weinberg. It's not the usual stuff about battles, strategy, and such but about the politics, economics, and things like the public's opinions. It looks huge but a good 1/3 or 1/4 of it is a huge bibliography. It's one of my favorite WWII books. (Anything by John Keegan is also a favorite.)

With the Kobo, when you're in the author display mode, it shows the author's name and how many books you have by them, which you can tap on to see their books. On the Kindle it's always one long list of all of your books sorted by author; no grouping. On the Kindle it sorts by first name; because of that I changed all of the author names in my Calibre library to be LastName, FirstName so that they'd be sorted by last name. But on the Kobo it figures out the last name when they're in the form FirstName LastName and since the Kobo is better in other ways as well I went back and changed all of the author names to work with the Kobo.

How does it handle justification? The Onyx Boox ignores the CSS (the book's formatting) for justification if it's set for ragged right and always displays the text justified with a straight right margin. I prefer ragged right since that avoids problems with wonky spacing between words. I can't remember for sure at the moment but I think the Kobo lets you select fully justified or ragged right so that you can override what the CSS says.

Another potential glitch is how it handles what I call the default font if the book has embedded fonts. The correct thing in my opinion is if the book uses an embedded font, for example, only in the chapter titles, then the rest of the text should be displayed in whatever font you've chosen from that list of fonts. With the Kindle you select either to use the book's (publisher's) font or one you've selected. When you've selected the book's font and embedded fonts are only used for the chapter titles, then the rest of the text is displayed in a sans serif font. This is also what happens on the Kobo when it's in Kobo epub format, but it does the right thing when it's in regular epub format. In a way I can sort of see why they do what I don't like, choosing some font for you; I think what they're implying is if the publisher uses an embedded font they should specify the font for everything. But what if they're only using an embedded font for things like dingbats, fleurons, etc.?

That's an excellent review, thanks a lot. I also got an answer to my question whether you can change the weight of embedded fonts. Apparently not.

All in all, I think I'll take a pass on the new Nook and wait for new devices from Amazon and Kobo. But I'll still be following the Nook threads for now, just in case.

It has thinner, normal, and thicker. No different levels of thickness.
