Unhappy PW3 - it's the battery or the Fw ?

Hi
I don't understand, but i have a PW3 from 2015.
in 2017 i stop to use it so the battery go to 0% for many months.

then when i turn on it, the battery go down from 100 to 0 in few hours (10 hours from 100 to 0 in stand by! )

then i buy 2 battery, one directly from aliexpress and one from ebay.

nothing to do, the battery, the 2 new battery, go down from 100 to 0% in one day....

in your experience, there are all 2 my battery fault, or it's kindle FW ? 5.11.1 (the last)

can i try to buy another battery?

thank you a lot!

Try leaving either newly bought battery on the charger (wall plug, not computer usb port) for a minimum of 24 hours before using. Then let it go down until the PW complains about low battery. Don't plug it in if it nags you, wait until it displays the screen with the "dead" battery. Charge again, then use as normal. The battery you let deplete completely more than likely has permanent damage from sitting around empty so long. This one you might be able to salvage, but I would leave it plugged in longer (maybe 2 days). See if that helps.

I've never bought a battery from them but I've always heard good things about newpower99.com's batteries. They've been in business a long time and I've never heard a bad review and lots of good reviews.

They also supply the tools you need to change the battery and a video showing you how.

They cost more. When I replaced my Paperwhite battery I made the mistake of buying a cheap battery from Ebay. It wasn't any better than the old one. I wish I'd paid the price for a good one. Replacing them is enough work that it's not something I'd want to do twice.

If you over discharge a LiIon battery, and leave it in that state for a long time, then you can indeed damage the battery. Note that "over discharge" does not mean "0 volts". I believe taking it down below a certain point (but still above 0 volts) is considered an over discharge. LiIon batteries that are in this over discharge state develop internal changes that destroy the battery. Sometimes a sophisticated LiIon charger can rescue batteries from this over discharged state. I highly doubt that the charging circuit in the Kindle is one of these sophisticated ones. Probably, a new battery will be required.

You said you've already bought two new batteries, but they acted similarly. Where did you buy these batteries? Was it from a reputable dealer? If they seemed like "such a deal because they were so cheap", well, you probably bought two batteries that were used and already destroyed themselves.

I did find some internet articles that mention LiIon over discharge problems for you to read:

thank you for answer...

im from italy and newpower99.com send only from USA. so, Shipping Rates it's 45$. nothing to do. i need to find a seller in Italy or Europe. 33.95 $ it's high for a battery, it's more convenient rebuy a new paperwhite, for example in warehouse deal during prime day or black friday

i think the correct cost for my PW3 its' not far 20Euros...
please if someone had information, tell me

I wonder if there's an issue with the kindle which is draining the batteries, especially as this has happened twice? Maybe an indexing issue? This happens if you load lots of books onto the kindle all at once - the kindle uses lots of battery while 'filing' the books, so it's best to leave it on charge during this process. (I always sideload books and leave the usb cable attached to the pc for a few hours, both to charge the kindle and help the books index.)

Are you sure that you fitted the batteries correctly? After this did you do a 24 hr wall-socket charge?

I've only once changed an ereader battery, my old Sony 505. A techie friend did this for me. I'm in the UK and managed to buy a battery from newpower99.com
but it's so long ago, I don't remember what I paid. However, I do remember the battery change being a very delicate process and the long charging time afterwards.

Another possible issue: do you have the wifi on all the time? This can be a big battery drain. Turn off the wifi unless you're downloading books.

All I've noticed going from PW3 to PW4, each with the latest updates, is that the PW4 charges much more quickly.
