Speed test material

Hi all,

Still on the fence about the 505 vs 700. Like many others I was planning on the 700, but am now having doubts. I'll probably go for a 505 and acl1 combo but I want to test the 700 in-store before laying down the cash. So my question: if I want to bring an sd card with some books to test performance what should I bring? Long books? Specific formats that are particularly taxing? And what should I test: page turn comparison times... Indexing?.... Jumping around in large page increments? Is there a book on the MR ebook upload page that usually makes ebook readers weep e-ink tears? I'd appreciate any guidance as I prepare for the Nov 24 prs700 release here in Toronto. Thanks!

Just to make sure.

When you go to shop and you bring LRF files on SD card and go through process of changing font size, you should know if you do it at home and use Sony's eBook Library software to upload LRF ebooks to your reader, the software will do the paginating, so it doesn't matter whether you have 505 or 700, it will take 1 second to shift from one font size to the next. Because you going to use SD card fcreated at home, the readers will have to do the job of paginating and I am sure 700 will be a lot faster. Although it doesn't really matter because it does this job only one time, then remembers the properties of the ebook.

700 has 5 font sizes. I would suggest to create at least 2 LRF files with smaller base font than usual. If I am not mistaken, the general consensus is that base font size is 10. If you test ebook with base font size of 10, then when you move to XXL, you might end up with 2 words per line, and just a few lines on a screen. In order to better appreciate two new additional sizes XL & XXL, I would suggest to create 2 LRF files specifically for 700. One with base font 8, and one with base font 9.

Good luck!

Will do. I'm new to the liseuse (if I may use the term) world, so I will report from the perspective of an eager, but untested noob.

Thanks

liseuse!!! Haha! Foreign words are funny (<sarcasm/> in case it wasn't completely obvious)

Personally I like "The Device" ... sounds like something Q branch would have made.

Well, my five year old daughter is in French school and speaks the language so much better than I do (her little friends already make fun of my english inflected accent) that I am happy to add any new words to my vocabulary. Thanks! And really, it sounds much more sophisticated...

Reader is surely a foreign word in French, too. So they're too obnoxious for you to use? So you're not authorised to use the words telephone or television either, inter alia

hm. actually, put like that, i suddenly have a new appreciation for "The Device". but it must always be used with the definite article and initial caps. and preferably in quotation marks.

well you couldn't have chosen a better one, then, because you get not one, not two, but about 6 words for the price of one, with liseuse. yep ! apart from meaning "electronic reading device", it also means :
1. lamp for reading
2. knife for cutting book pages (also used as a bookmark)
3. protective book cover
4. short jacket worn by women in bed (while reading)
5. a woman reading (lectrice).
bonus !
now, if you can just manage to think of ways to slip it into conversation for each one of its meanings...

oh, yep, it is. not that that stops the french from using it (some of them).
