What is the best and easiest way to change a .prc ebook to a format the Sony ereader will accept and display the best ?

Assuming that:

1. By "PRC" you mean "MobiPocket" (PRC is a general-purpose extension that's used by lots of different applications, but MobiPocket books are the most commonly-encounter eBooks that use the extension).

2. The book has no DRM.

then you can do the conversion with "Calibre".

It's best to avoid using the term "ereader" for the Sony Reader, by the way. It can lead to confusion with the eBook format called "eReader" which the Sony Reader can't read.

mobi2lrf is your best bet for converting DRM free Mobipocket format to LRF format.
