(or anything newer than Kindle basic ‘keyboardless non touch’) will not play MP3 files that typically are used for library audiobooks. |

And your phone is 100% the better choice for listening to audiobooks anyway

Yep. Audiobooks are not a happy companion for the small battery of an eInk device. It’ll drain the battery flat in a very few hours. A cheap MP3 player will do far better.

Is this accurate? A Kindle basic has a 1530mah battery. My phone has 1642mah battery. I think I can probably get about 6 hours listening to audio on my phone with everything on (cell, wifi, gps, bluetooth). Why would the Kindle basic be worse (assuming you turn off wifi)? Is the screen on/updating on the Kindle Basic while you are listening to an Audiobook?

I thought a lot of this stuff was basically "free", but just wasn't implemented. For example most wifi chips on e-readers have Bluetooth support, but the Bluetooth isn't implemented/exposed to the user. Just curious, thanks. |

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. Even the cheapest phone or MP3 player almost certainly has a hardware codec to do the "decoding" of the MP3, but a basic Kindle does not.

For the OP, what you need is a cheap Fire tablet. That will play audiobooks from your library just fine using the app. No computer required (Amazon registers your unit when you buy it, so not a problem there). The ability to sideload audiobooks on a Kindle ereader ended with I think the Touch (2012).

Unlocked Android phones can be had as cheaply as Fire, e.g. for $39: https://www.amazon.com/BLU-Advance-U...phone+unlocked One would add SD storage of course. The size is much more portable than a Fire tablet, which is more ideal for audiobooks. And with Google Play App Store, you could install library apps that are not available on Fire from Amazon AppStore (I think the only one there is Overdrive, the rest you have to side-load). It'll play Amazon's Audible books via Bluetooth speakers or headphones, but not the standard audio books they loan at public libraries.
