The best thing would be to goto http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu...505&SelectOS=7 and download the latest firmware and reflash with that. It should be fine.

Why would it need to recognize the SD card? If I remember correctly, it runs from a windows PC doesn't it?

Try running the Windows firmware app on a different PC? I needed to try a second laptop when I re-flashed mine, as it didn't detect the 505 using the first one I tried.
Still, the comment about the SD card confuses me too -Maybe you need to expand on what you're doing & seeing? Last edited by gwynevans; 11-04-2008 at 11:53 AM. |

Also make sure you plug the cable into the PC and not a hub. Try differents ports.

sorry to confuse you guys,
on that particular occasion, the computer detectd the ebook's internal memory: with that single protected file, without detecting the sd cards that were in the memory slots. now after trying all sorts of combination to reset the ebook, it is stuck with this message: READER updating firmware now.... for the last 5 hours!!!! i have tried other devices with the cables and usb slots, they're working fine. only the ebook is "busted". raymond |

Don't worry about the cards, they won't be visible in firmware update mode. The single protected file is also normal in this case. Try updating the firmware again; reset the reader (don't forget to toggle the ON switch after pressing reset), connect it to the port which worked last time (since it looks like you were able to start the update after all) and restart the updater.
Another issue might be is that the battery is flat; is the red light on when Reader is connected? The best would be to get a PSP charger and charge the Reader with it completely. |

thanks for all the advise guys,
jedavis1, igorsk, gwynevans. the ebook finally went out of 'juice' after last night's trys. re-connected the ebook to the laptop, and a couple of reset later, the update button from the firmware program was enabled!! yipee. a 'refresh' of the firmware and presto, the ebook's back in business!!! i had actually given up hope initially and my wife's encouragement and prayer's must have changed the situation!! not forgetting the pointers you guys gave. thanks again raymond |

Glad you sorted it out. The Reader is pretty hard to brick completely (Sony programmers did a great job here) but bringing it back to life might sometimes be a mite difficult
